Hello everyone,

I'm new to the H system and am currently using the x2d body. I find it so much harder to deal with comparing to other brands. Unfortunately I don't own any IOS devices, the macbook is my only Apple device. I want to use the "AI" denoise, be it of LR, DXO, or Phocus but no luck.

- The phocus desktop doesn't have HNNR even though I'm using the M4 chip, which is a shame.

- Android devices don't have Phocus Mobile app => planning to buy an ipad for editing when travelling.

- My current cf express type B card is not accepted by the camera (the brand is Homan) => ordering a sandisk card.

- When I connect my camera to the laptop (without Phocus running), I don't see the camera storage appear in Finder (explorer for windows equivalent). With Phocus opened, it will automatically convert files to fff ext.

I wonder if the behavior that laptop not recognising the hasselblad storage is normal and expected?

If I use the memory card , will I be able to retrieve the 3fr files?

Can I store the 3fr files (hard drive or clouds) and reuse them in the future on the ipad since I believe the internal storage of the ipad will run out soon.

Thanks and happy shooting.

Refer to the README file for Phocus 4.0. Right-click on a thumbnail image to access HNNR.

Did you press the "Mass Storage" button on the camera's LCD to mount the SSD? Are you connecting to a Mac or Windows device, and which OS version?

Phocus 4.0 no longer converts to FFF.

It is neither typical nor expected.

Yes, but you should be able to mount both the CFe and SSD directly via USB-C.

Current version of Phocus for Mac--4.0.1--includes HNNR, so your M4 MacBook will let you use AI Denise.

Can't tell you about your memory card issue. I use a Sony XQD reader rather than plugging in the X2Dii directly.

I haven't decided how I'm going to use it on the go yet.

Option 1 would be mass storage and connecting a cable. Lightroom Mobile will handle the RAW files, but I probably have to copy them manually.

Option 2 get a card and a mobile card reader. More small parts to hassle with, still have to copy them manually or run a script.

Option 3 but and old iphone connected to my Android phones Wifi and importing the images with Lightroom Mobile.

Lr will allow you to use the AI Denoise feature on any 3FR file. Just import it into your catalog. Do not import .fff as Lr will just strip off all the embedded data from Phocus. Can’t help in the SSD issue I only use CFe cards with a card reader.

Unluckily the HNNR option is always greyed out for me. I'm on Phocus 4 and MacOS Sonoma 14.7

True, it does not convert the files automatically without asking but ironically when it imports the files it will convert to fff without any other option

My laptop actually can see the camera ssd but is unable to mount it as a normal drive. Chatgpt said because of the partition map. I'm hesitating on running first aid on this ssd, afraid that it would mess up the systemfile of the camera

I assume you are testing it on M4 hardware. Note that HNNR work only on 3FR files. It does not work on FFF or JPEG files.

That is strange, I do not expect Phocus 4 to convert files to FFF. How do you import?

Things have changed quite significantly with the introduction of Phocus v4.0 (and now 4.0.1)

1. Until Phocus v 4.0.1 the only option was to convert 3FR files from the camera to 3fff files if you wanted to edit them in Phocus. Phocus did not allow editing of 3FR files. You can edit both 3FR files and 3fff files in Photoshop, Camera Raw and Lightroom but you could only make corrections to your files in Phocus if they were in 3fff format.

2. To convert 3FR files to 3fff you have to import them into Phocus. Contrary to what was said in an earlier response, Converting from 3FR to 3fff does not cause any loss of quality. Compare 3FR files to their 3fff files and you will not see any difference at all. The advantage of the 3fff file is that on the X2D it is about 50MB smaller than the 3FR file. That adds up for a lot of storage space over time. Paradoxically on earlier versions of the Hasselblad H cameras the 3FR file was smaller than the same file in 3fff format. Now things are reversed. BUT there is no loss of quality.

3. If you want to take advantage of Hasselblad's HNCS then you have to edit in Phocus and export as a Tiff. With versions of Phocus prior to v4.0 that required you to import the files as 3fff files. Edits in Phocus that you make to the 3ff file are not "baked in" unless you export them as Tiffs or Jpegs. If you make corrections to a 3fff file you can't save those corrections to the file that will be recognised in PS or LR. You have to export as a Tiff.

4. V4.0 has changed that (or may have - I haven't checked this out yet). You can now directly edit 3FR files in Phocus. In theory that should also allow you to use Hasselblad's Denoise feature - HNNR. On the desktop app that, apparently, only works with 3FR files. On Phocus Mobile 2 it will work on 3fff files. I haven't got this to work. But since I seldom shoot with my X2D or X2D ii above 200-400 iso this isn't something that interests me particularly.

5. Contrary to what many are saying you can still import 3FR files as 3fff files in Phocus v4.0. But to do so you have to connect the camera to the computer by using the "Skip" option. If you check the "Mass Storage" option you will find that you can't import the files as 3fffs. But if you use the "Skip" option then Phocus will still recognise the camera and you can import as 3fff files. Why this is so is a mystery to me at least.

6. If you check the "Mass Storage" option then the Mac Finder will recognise the camera as an external drive and you can simply copy files onto your computer as from an external drive. The "Skip" option does not allow the Finder to recognise the camera as an external drive, but Phocus will still recognise it and deal with it. So you can import directly from the camera to your computer via Phocus.

7. I have used Phocus for nearly 20 years now. In earlier days it was definitely superior to Lightroom. Now things are much much closer. 90% of my work is done directly in Lightroom. Sometimes for some files I process in Phocus and export as a Tiff and can see a difference. But generally I just import everything as a 3fff file into LR and if I decide I want to make an exhibition print at A2 or larger will then make corrections in Phocus, export as a Tiff and compare to the file I have edited in LR. Sometimes the Tiff file as exported is better but often it is marginal.

8. Unless you are going to make dramatic edits in Photoshop then be alert to the fact that 16bit Tiffs from Phocus on an X2D run at 600MB whereas 8 bit Tiffs are pretty much 1/2 the size.

9. I think v4.0 is still pretty buggy, so my advice to a new user is to download the previous version - v3.8.6 and experiment with that and wait for a v4.1 update.

FFF files are losslessly compressed, while 3FR file are uncompressed, hence the file size difference. FFF files can also include Phocus operations that were applied.

I do something similar to option three with an upgraded iPad. Honestly, while a little bulky (I have the largest iPad) I find that to really do justice to 100 mpx 16 bit raws, a bigger screen is useful. I’ve done this on several trips now and the iPad slips nicely into the large front pocket on the camera bag/backpack. I use Phocus on the iPad and tether to the phone to upload shots to cloud storage or share on occasion.
