anyone with photos . How is shutter speed. They really reduced the price but so far I have searched hard for comments and lots of contradictions.

Rick, what price have you seen on it? Some of the photos posted have looked really good for such a little camera. Joan

Joan,

Go to price grabber.com . I read one thing and someone posted another story. One that nikon lowed the suggested retail price to $299 which is excellent and two that they are phasing the camera out (someone posted that). There are a few reviews at epinion.com and on Phils site that give it low marks. The colors look really good but I am not sure about sharpness, speed of shutter or noise. I think like I said before, for a small camera the shutter speed is most important behind photo quality. A really good comparison would be the new 3700 compared to the sq and the s400 from Canon. So far my choice would be the 3700 but its allot of money and early in the review process. I would like to see the 3700 in person to see how small it is. Is one hundred dollars more for a 3mp camera ok , if say, the shutter speed is faster or the photos are better or the movie mode is better? Maybe.

Nikon SQ is more flexible in the sense that you can control where you are focusing. But 3700 is really very rigid and is meant to be a foolproof and only allows point and shoot.

No way you can do things with this 3700 as compared to the SQ. Though quality wise, SQ is kinda noisy. 3700 not sure. Tried it out at a computer show. Handy but limited in features.

the pics speaks for itself - noisy !!!
Look carefully at Dr. C-K Shene's several postings on the SQ. I think he has been very insightful.

The initial rap on the SQ has been that it is a "noisy" camera. However, I don't know that it's been closely examined in a professional review. Further, I think that many of the negative comments were based on people's expectations that a 3MP camera at a pricey $500US ought to be flawless and blow away the competition.

As Dr. Shene has said, in fact the SQ is a design camera, with some unique features and some limitations.
I bought it on two points: POCKET & SWIVEL camera.

I got it as a gift for my wife, and wondered if how she'd react. (You know, one of those gifts he gets for her because he really wants it.) In fact, she's been delighted with it.

We also have a CP5000 and the SQ obviously doesn't compete in fine image quality. However, for printing standard snapshots, there is not a wide disparity. We just returned from a vacation where my wife took pics with the SQ and I with the 5000 set to file jpegs at the medium-quality normal setting. I got the wide-angles, she the details, and our shots mixed seamlessly in a slide show.

I've carried the SQ and it's fun. The swivel is still a strong plus. You can get down on the ground, or above the crowd, and find unique angles. The LCD screen on the SQ is easier to view than the CP5000 screen.

The only negative for the SQ I can offer ironically comes from its strength--the small size. With a little camera and using it in unusual positions, it's harder to find the horizontal or vertical level, and you can end up with tilting horizons. Or, you can move the camera and end up with blur. Plus, the grip could be stickier.

This is a long narrative without picture proof, but the point I'm getting to is that the SQ at $300US can be viewed in a different, more reasonable light. Nikon may be discontinuing it, but for some it can be a good camera to catch on the way out.
Sometimes "unique" doesn't rule the marketplace. -Ted

What really caught my eye, is the picture of your computer and the camera in the base. It looks bigger then I thought. I didn't see that much difference between the sq and the nikon on that shot. A little more noise. Still I thought the camera was a bit smaller. I am definitely either getting the s400 or Nikon 3700 now. Thanks!

Oops I meant between the nikon and the minolta , meant to say. Again thanks for the photos!

As I mentioned in previous posts, the camera does exhibit more noise than is typical, but it can be easily corrected in software. I use PhotoBrush, which has a one-click RGB noise removal function that works quite well.
