How did Nic Managed flash on this photo???

Hello

First congratulations Nic! I just love this picture and been trying
to reproduce it myself, but without luck.

How was the lightning done for this?

I'm not new at photography or lights, but for sure I'm a lot rusty.

So any takers? how this one was done??

Thanks

Softbox (or large skylight / window) above the apple and slightly to camera left.

White reflector or possibly another softbox to the side of the apple at camer left. Probably a fill card. If softbox, it was dialed 3 or 4 stops down from main.

Corners are burned down or vingette added via photoshop. All that dark space was not created with the light but in post.

I'ld put $10 on that I'm 90% right. Oh no.... a new photo addiction. Step right up ladies and gentlemen! Guess how this shot was lit! Place your bets now! :)

And you could always just hunt the photographer and ask them.

what makes you think it is photoshop?
If you do a lot of Photoshop work you can spot it fairly quickly. Now first let me say, it's a great shot. However the photographer wanted to get the shot is fine by me so I don't want anyone thinking I am slamming them. This isn't photojournalism so have at it in the realm of retouching!

Let's say you were to take the image in question into Photoshop....

Open it up, open levels. Take the middle slider (midtones) and pull it all the way to the left (to the shadows) you will then see exactly where the manipulations happened. It's either Photoshop or the bending of the rules of physics.

maybe I'm old fashioned, but this looks more like lighting than photoshop.

I have done a lot of both and could make this easier in the studio than on the computer.

Look at some of Phil Marco's ad work from the 70-80s.

I agree with most of this answer, but I also believe that this shot might be able to be done without any special gradient masking in Photoshop. A often under-utilized (or under-realized!) concept is that of using Black fill cards to absorb excess light. Based on the reflections (hot above the apple, several stops less to the left) it is probably a small softbox (or a Lumiquest or similar diffuser on a portable electronic flash) above and a White fill card to the left as mentioned and either Black fill cards on the opposite (dark!) side or maybe it is sitting on black velvet or a similar fabric to help absorb any stray reflections. Feathering the flash towards the back of the scene might accomplish some of the falloff in the front right side. I could be all wrong, but it might be a good experiment to try to reproduce this simple scene just to see if the light can be controlled in this manner. As much as I love Photoshop myself, if I can somehow achieve the result in-camera then I feel like I've learned more of the craft of photography. A computer complete with Photoshop might not be available in every situation and it never hurts to improve your arsenal of lighting techniques!

Well you could do some thing similar with one light snooted and a piece of milk plex and no PS

For the image in question - Take the image into Photoshop. Open levels. Pull the midtones all the way over to the shadow (pull to the left) and you will see the masking.

If you look very, very close at the image online, you will see a straight line shadow in the lower left hand corner. That's part of the mask.

Thank you for your answers.

wing, I'm sorry I never intended to tell you your photo was done in photoshop. Congratulations! you have a great lightning technique.

It was just that this image has been some sort of challenge for me. Of course I could try to contact Nic, althought I believe he said he would be traveling, but also I wanted to do that myself.

Kraig, your photo looks like but is not as sharp as the one intended, and also the shadows don't correspond.

I'm starting to believe it was a mix of things light and some photoshop work.

Thank you really guys for your answers!!!

If you look carefully at the image you can see the shape of the light

it looks to be a small strip softbox -- that would account for the fall off in the light. Sometimes I think we digital people don't spend enough time learning about light and lighting -- its usually better and easier to get it "right of the camera"

check out creative lighting techniques or some other books on lighting if you get a chance. Its amazing how you can affect the quality of the light.
