Except the OM3 performs like a Ferrari - it's truly world class in performance, which is also important for me.You could have written that (except for the WR bit) exactly 9 years ago for the Pen-FSeriously. You might not believe me - but I didn't actually want the OM-3 at first. I thought I'd get it to make a few videos with, and then sell it. That EVF alone was a dealbreaker, even though I really love M43 as a system - I just thought the price was all wrong.
But then I got the thing in my hands and... things started to click. This isn't just an urban camera. It's a precision machine that's combined the best of all things M43: tiny as hell, packed with unbelievable features, beyond weather resistant with the right lenses, and stunning image quality with a proven sensor.
I think this might be the most capable camera ever made for the creative soul - and it really doesn't have much to do with the "creative dial."
It's the culmination - it's all the tricks, the dial, the ND filter, the crazy color controls, the wild dual-IS with something like the 12-100... the things you can do with a camera like this and one or two lenses is just an artist's dream.
And... it's got me loving jpegs again:
This thing is fantastic.
I just didn't think I'd like it being lower resolution. Why is the EVF alone a deal breaker?I thought I'd get it to make a few videos with, and then sell it. That EVF alone was a dealbreaker,
I thought it was too high for a camera that seemed hard to recommend over a Zf in almost any way.Why did you think the price was all wrong?even though I really love M43 as a system - I just thought the price was all wrong.
Olympus markets it as such - even on their product page. What's an urban camera? But then I got the thing in my hands and... things started to click. This isn't just an urban camera.
This much tech? The stacked sensor, the speed, the battery life - it's really a combo that hasn't happened in any body - that I've used at least. It's a precision machine that's combined the best of all things M43: tiny as hell,
Totally get it - but hear me out: the camera, at a base level - it's really good. The manual exposure experience is great (tactile and fast), and the autofocus, even on single shot in the middle is lightning fast - seemingly so far with great accuracy. But still larger than the Olympus retro offerings that came before it.
Now I seriously might not believe you!packed with unbelievable features, beyond weather resistant with the right lenses, and stunning image quality with a proven sensor.

It sounds like you're new to micro 4/3rds!- and it really doesn't have much to do with the "creative dial."

For what it's worth, gushing over a camera in this way makes you come across as kinda fake. Just saying!And... it's got me loving jpegs again:

Thanks,Thanks Gary and I must say you helped influence me with this lens after seeing your recent post on it, loved the photos you captured with it and I think people snub kit lenses a bit to often, some of my favourite shots were taken with kit lenses when I first started with Olympus, my E510 was one of those with the 14-42 kit lens,Looks just great .....That's right and I'm in love again, I really am and I just can't get enough of this little Ripper at the moment, I just want to be with it all of the time.
The Son of the OM-1 that's what I call it and it has blown me away with everything about it, I bought my OM-3 a little present yesterday, a new 14-42mm pancake Lens in silver of course, I was delighted to be one of the first to get mine here but now as more and more get their pre orders the place has really come alive and I'm loving seeing all the happy punters here and bugger all of the naysayers, they are the ones missing out
I'd be interested in how the 14-42EZ works out for you. I use that lens on my OM-5 for travel and have never been disappointed. Maybe not quite as sharp as my 12-45 f/4 but no slouch either and makes for a really compact kit.
This new pancake lens has turned essentially a OM-1 Mk2 into a true compact and a very powerful capable one at that, thanks heaps for you influence
There seems to be a significant difference in size and form factor between the two. I would not like to stull the OM-1 into a smaller bag. I think there is also a significant difference in weight. They are 2 different cameras for 2 different primary purposes.
I understand the excitement over a new shiny toy.I'm not mad at all, Cafe Racer, and I get it. If I come across as fake, I apologize. I do not make a cent off anything OM3 related!
The Om-3 has really just hit a home run with me. I had the Om-1 for a long time and I loved it, but it still "looked" like a serious camera, even if it was a lit more indistinct than a big Canon or Nikon. Yet performance wise, it was awesome, if not top tier in autofocus.
Fast forward a few years, and my priorities have shifted a bit, and I'd like to have my GFX be my professional, "pay the bills" cameras, while I have one or two other, smaller cameras for everything else.
M43 fits that bill.
I tried to make it work with the Z8 and Zf - and it's a stunning system. But it's a little bigger and heavier than I'd like.
I'm just not in favor of Fuji any longer...
but the OM3 is a really stunning camera. It's a camera that can absolutely be my "everything else" camera - as in it goes with me to the store, or to walk with my wife - with the 15mm f/1.7 on it - and it focuses like lighting and gets me some seriously cool shots. It's a camera that's a conversation starter too - but it's a camera that doesn't make anyone nervous. In fact, they dig how small and light it is - and "retro" it is - and it breaks the ice. The OM1, Z8, and even the Zf doesn't do that. The X100 or Xt series sometimes can be like this... but with M43 I can still throw a 100-400 on it (that's in the back seat because it's so small and light) if I see something else on the way home... or even a stunning macro lens that can fit in a pocket (the 60) - that can actually focus stack in the field (in certain conditions)?

At the base level, it just does a great job doing this. Even Fujifilm couldn't always do that with their autofocus - but the OM3 absolutely does.
Then combine the color profiles and art filters - the black and white profiles, including grain - some of it is very "toy" camera like. BUT - man... shoot it with a vision? USE them for a cool reason, and who cares? My audience isn't other photographers - for this camera, the audience is me, and if I love it, that's what matters!
THEN you combine all that with the CP button? There are so many cool things there too... again - for someone who wants a camera with very few limits on allowing me to achieve my vision - this camera very much fits that bill (especially with some character lenses like the 15 1.7 or 25 1.4.
All good if you don't believe me - but man - my Z8, Zf, X100vi, GRIII - they can all go because the OM3 does most things those cameras can do and more. Not all things - not at all - and not for everyone - but for me.
So that's all good in my book.

The OM3 is £1549 with the 12-45 from Cotswold Cameras.OM-1 mk2 + 12-40mm f2.8 £1849.00.Where I shop the OM3 is only £30 more.
If you buy it with the 12-45 it's actually £120 less than the OM1 ii with 12-45.
I'd probably prefer the OM1 ii being more into wildlife photography but I've seriously considered the OM3.
It's going to appeal more to some people.
Congratulations Gary, your as bad as what I am, you will love the new OM-3 more and more the more you use it, the perfect camera for your creative eye, I have been admiring mine ever since I got itI finally succumbed to the call, although I resisted for longer than usual.
My wife and I were on our way to a Zimbabwe sculpture exhibit at a local botanical garden. Our travel route took us right by our local camera shop (yes, we still have one) and so I stopped in to see if they had an OM-3 that I could fondle, and they did…… but now they don’t.. I had both my OM-1 II and OM-5 in the car, so the 12-45 F/4 came off the OM-5, a spare SD card, and a spare charged up OM-1 battery and…l off to the garden.
A few quick snaps and any thoughts on using either the OM-5 or the OM-1 for the day vanished. The Color and Monochrome creative profiles immediately brought back what I liked about my now long gone Pen F, and the way better performance and auto focus than the Pen F (and the OM-5) was wonderful…. and the finger gouging from the creative dial was also reminiscent of the Pen F, ugh.
BTW, What’s the beef about the EVF…… completely slipped my mind to check it out.

Why do YOU care about other people's preferences SO much?if you feel OM1.2 is right for you, just buy it, make OM System happy.Maybe the OP is not aware of the existence of the OM-1. If I had to choose between the two cameras the choice would be easy. The OM-1. It's even £200 cheaper! The function of OM-3 is more or less the same with OM-1. And its size and weight is not much smaller than OM-1 when you put a lens on it. Could you please elaborate more why you love OM-3 so much more than your OM-1?
if you feel the OM5 is right for you, just buy it, makes OM System happy.
why everyone have to be the SAME as YOU? and WHY pisssing at other peoples parade.
At first I though you were describing my almost 10 year old Olympus E-m1iii, except I've got dual card slots and a fully articulating screen and no gimmicky color dial.Seriously. You might not believe me - but I didn't actually want the OM-3 at first. I thought I'd get it to make a few videos with, and then sell it. I hope so, there are 9 years of technological progress in between. World class performance only ever lasts for one season or two, then something better comes around changing the yardstick.Except the OM3 performs like a Ferrari - it's truly world class in performance, which is also important for me.You could have written that (except for the WR bit) exactly 9 years ago for the Pen-FSeriously. This thing is fantastic.
Checked out the shots on your site - good stuff! I think it's fantastic that the camera is inspiring you to go outside and take photos - that's what it's all about at the end of the day.
As much as I love my OM-1 Mark II as a "tool of the trade", it doesn't inspire me to take it everywhere - I suspect the OM-3 will fit the bill there once I'm able to afford one!![]()
Congrats Gary, I knew you would give in and the shots from the botanical garden are beautiful!I finally succumbed to the call, although I resisted for longer than usual.

The 14-42EZ has been a mainstay for me for nearly 10 years now. I still have a silver, my black one died but for the $129 refurb price I paid for it, that’s fine. Get the auto open/close lens cap for it, brilliantThat's right and I'm in love again, I really am and I just can't get enough of this little Ripper at the moment, I just want to be with it all of the time.

Yes that cap has come to my attention and I have been thinking about it, as a matter of fact this lens has only just come to my attention and I'm impressed with how it works, very quiet and it has turned the OM-3 into a completely different camera, I love it.The 14-42EZ has been a mainstay for me for nearly 10 years now.
