You need to compensate for sky

Richard,

When shooting against a bright sky, compensate by 1.3 to 1.7EV.

This is how I take all these airplane shots: http://www.pbase.com/domdom/miramar2003

If you don't compensate for the sky, all your pictures will be dark. So, if you shoot in Aperture or Shutter priiority, turn up the EV compensation. If shooting in manual, adjust so that the light reading shows 1.7ev.
