I'm buying a used R7. How can I tell if it's a US model?

I'm starting my move to mirrorless and have settled on a used Canon R7, probably from Ebay or Fred Miranda.

Can I tell from the serial number if it is a USA model (so I can get service from Canon, if needed)?

Thanks!

As the seller to provide proof of the original purchase. It's not just US. Any camera purchased in North America is valid for warranty. Purchases outside of that are considered grey market. The R7 may be too old for warranty but where it was purchased will provide the information you need.

I will also add once a US model is 1 year old, Canon USA will treat a US model and a grey market version exactly the same. So if the R7 you are buying comes with a receipt from the original owner, and it is dated more than 365 days ago, it really doesn't matter.

If you were to send it to Canon for service at that point, it would be no different.

I know from experience. I've personally sent in both USA and Grey market equipment to Canon for service, and they do not care where it came from once the original warranty expires after 12 months, they charge you the same exact price for any services on US or Grey gear.

Consider buying a used camera from a reputable dealer that offers a warranty, or a returns policy if you decide against buying once you’ve received it. MPB is one example, I’m sure there are many others. You will pay a little more than an eBay purchase, but gain peace of mind.

Thanks! Good to know.

You might also consider buying a refurb from Canon if they are available. Their refurb gear carries a 1-year warranty just as the new gear does.
