The new firmware for the OM-1 was released yesterday. Officially, only the WiFi protocol has been changed.
In reality, however, the entire AF has been changed. And, note, the OM-1 has got the AF of the OM-1II. And, buckle up, better.
When the OM-1II came out, I complained that the subject recognition was no good. Apparently they've now rebuilt it and taken the opportunity to add it to the OM-1.
Car detection, bicycles, birds.... Suddenly all the pictures are sharp. All of them. Not 30% like the G9Ii or 50% like the old OM-1. All of them. I used to be an advocate of C-AF as a clearly superior method of focusing. With the new firmware, that is no longer the case. Now I have to search for the out-of-focus images in scene recognition - no longer the sharp ones.
Low-light focusing has also been drastically improved. What they've built is a new camera.
Oh yes. To all FT users. You haven't had anything like this in your hands yet. The 35-100 is suddenly a rocket.
I will of course be out and about with the camera over the next few days and will be carrying out further tests. The S-AF now has the behavior of the OM-1II and does not refocus, but refocuses. But while the OM-1II often got stuck on the background in the first version, we now have a rock steady Nearest is Best.
Folks. It's barely spring before it's fall again. And that's just firmware 1.6.
