New firmware update for OM-1.1:
  • Improve stability of some functions.
  • The security level for smartphone connection is now selectable. If you cannot connect to the Wi-Fi, set the level to "WPA2". Refer to the updated instruction manual for more information.
"Improve stability of some functions" could be nothing, could be everything :-)

I updated with the OI.Share app. The process was straightforward enough, but when the app said it would take about 2 minutes to update (for the OK message to appear on the screen), that step actually took over 3 minutes for my camera.

This update WIPES your camera settings – even the clock! So make sure you heed the warning to save your camera settings before proceeding. Don’t assume that’s just a worst-case backup plan. The warning should have made it clearer that it’s for real and not just the usual boilerplate text. You’ll need your saved settings.

Although, impressively, the updated user manual was immediately available in the app (under Camera How To), I didn’t find a way to download that PDF. The user manual link on the OM System website that I checked (I’m never sure which of the many websites to use) still leads to the old user manual.

I haven’t compared the old and new user manual for the exact differences.

when you say user settings is that like a full factory reset? Does it impact everything I have reset from the norm?

It’s hard for me to be sure.

After the update applied and I restarted the camera as requested, the app prompted me to retrieve my settings from the last save I luckily did a few days ago.

However, I had to set the clock manually. The date and time fields in the camera were blank after this update, so that suggests a pretty low-level reset to me – but I can’t know.

On a related note, I haven’t been able to get the camera time to set automatically from the app, perhaps because I cannot find out how to establish “Private Connection mode”, whatever that means. I am new to the OM-1 camera.

I previously updated my OM-1 firmware from 1.4 to 1.5, also via the app, and that did not wipe my settings or my clock, so something has changed. Maybe they’re preparing the ground for the big firmware 2.0 update in the autumn?

Just saw there’s another, earlier thread about this firmware update (and similar ones for other cameras) here:

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4755781

Someone there reported “ignoring” the request to set the camera language after restarting (oh yes, I had to select English) – in whatever way you can ignore it – and that the language, time zone, and clock were then preserved.

Apply your own judgement about what is going on. If you have a backup or two of your settings in OI.Share (settings cog at top-right > Camera Management > Camera Settings) you should be safe whatever happens in your particular case.

The version 1.6 can be downloaded from here: Manual download : OM-1 (ver1.6) (omsystem.com) If it doesn't download right click the link and select "Save link as."

Updating via OM Workspace, settings are saved / restored, but for some reason language and time/date are not (er ... was Timezone always part of time/date ?)

Camera still seems to work :-)

Do non-OEM batteries still work?

Pen and Tell noticed significant improvements to Subject Detection.

The new firmware for the OM-1 was released yesterday. Officially, only the WiFi protocol has been changed.

In reality, however, the entire AF has been changed. And, note, the OM-1 has got the AF of the OM-1II. And, buckle up, better.

When the OM-1II came out, I complained that the subject recognition was no good. Apparently they've now rebuilt it and taken the opportunity to add it to the OM-1.

Car detection, bicycles, birds.... Suddenly all the pictures are sharp. All of them. Not 30% like the G9Ii or 50% like the old OM-1. All of them. I used to be an advocate of C-AF as a clearly superior method of focusing. With the new firmware, that is no longer the case. Now I have to search for the out-of-focus images in scene recognition - no longer the sharp ones.

Low-light focusing has also been drastically improved. What they've built is a new camera.

Oh yes. To all FT users. You haven't had anything like this in your hands yet. The 35-100 is suddenly a rocket.

I will of course be out and about with the camera over the next few days and will be carrying out further tests. The S-AF now has the behavior of the OM-1II and does not refocus, but refocuses. But while the OM-1II often got stuck on the background in the first version, we now have a rock steady Nearest is Best.

Folks. It's barely spring before it's fall again. And that's just firmware 1.6.

Download was quick but the actual firmware upgrading before you get the OK sign seemed to take ages (felt like 5 mins). So go away and make a cup of coffee/tea while it's doing its circular arrows bit, to avoid twiddling your thumbs worrying it won't work and the camera will be bricked... it will work but it wasn't speedy for me....

I updated the 150-400 firmware that I didn't realise had been in existence since the end of last year.

Why would OM introduce a major improvement and not tell anyone. I hope someone can quickly confirm or not.

They told somebody.

Ditto. It actually failed first 2 times (via OMW v2.3, first time ever this happens), getting a failed to communicate with camera error msg and a brief low battery error flashed the second time (49% charge) before getting to the wait screen on the camera. I took the hint, swapped a fresh battery fully charged and it worked, although like you said not very quick once the wait screen appeared. A progress indicator would be nice, so you at least know it didn't freeze. Lost language and date/time, everything else was OK.

I’m thinking that since both models use the TruePic X processor, that it would be technically advantageous for the firmware to be consistent where possible. So it’s possible the OM1.1 gets a benefit, going forward.

It makes the OM-1 AF better than the OM-1ii?????
According to that web page, it's a completely rebuilt AF system. :-|
Must be the poor German to English translation…you think?
Or maybe just the usual blind faith.

I guess the OMDS marketing department is on vacation 😀

Mine do. I have two batteries from DSTE that can even be charged in the original OMDS charger.
