Which lenses are missing from Nikon Z roadmap?

Now that Nikon has largely completed its lens roadmap, and no longer provides details on upcoming lenses, which lenses do you think are still missing from the lineup?

Top three for me would be:

1) 8-15mm f/3.5-4.5 Fisheye (for underwater photography)

2) 28mm f/1.8

3) 70-200 f/4.0

Which lenses do you think are still missing?

16mm prime

70-300 zoom

Z NIKKOR 80-320 F2.8 TC VR S (A wishful thinking version of the canon RF 100-300)

Tilt-shift lenses and fisheye.

Some of those earliest Z lenses may be updated in another 2, 3 years, such as the early f2.8 zooms, 24-70, 70-200. There is also a trend to extend such zoom ranges to, e.g. 20-70 and 24-105, etc. A 6 to 7-year update cycle is common for those lenses.

Hi!

The Z cameras ought to allow for nice TS lens designs.

Here's a nice link regarding Nikon's lens Roadmap:

Best Regards,

Z 35mm f/2 (and an SE version) compact prime à la the 40mm f2 for the Zf.

(Might even get me to cancel my order for the Fuji X100VI !)

Just what I would like - I mostly have these covered with third party or adapted but if the native Z offered an improvement it would be very welcome.

Obviously the 35mm 1.2? still out there.

Something wider than 14mm

Compact wide prime 15-20mm in the family of 40 F2 or even 26 2.8

Prime 12-17mm faster than 2.8

light compact 70-300 ish

Fisheye

24mm PC

180-400 TC

300 F4 PF

1.7x Tcon

120-300ish 2.8 (TC would be great) please make this and the 180-400 lighter than the F mount even if that pushes the price up. I would also quite like a more compact 70-200 2.8 V2 as well if they run out of ideas.

They need a 28 fast prime as well, as it's a crazy popular focal length, but it's a focal length I surround but seldom use and I have the F mount.

However I hope they surprise us with something I didn't know I wanted. I tried the Tamron 35-150 and expected to love it but wasn't feeling it. So maybe an F2 zoom, 2x macro or a power zoom cinema lens with dial in ND.

Definitely the 28mm f/1.8 or f/1.4. I love that focal length for walking around. Although I can use the G version with adapter, a Z version will no doubt be sharper.

I thought about buying the Z 35mm f/1.8, but that's not what I really want. The 24mm would be close, but too close to the 20mm f/1.8, which I already have.

If only there was something like a 14-75mm f/3.5-4.5 or f/4 with a decent close-focusing distance! That would be the perfect travel lens for almost any destination. Cathedrals? no problem! Portraits or group shots? No problem! Impromptu macro? Heck ya.

Within the context of "not crazy" list, I'd say I'd like to see them do:
  • 14mm/1.8S
  • 18mm/1.8S
  • 24/1.2S
  • 28/1.8S
  • 28/1.2S
  • 105/1.8S Plena Junior (or whatever)
  • 200/1.8S
  • 180/2.8S
  • 200/4MC Macro
  • 300/4 non-PF S
  • 17-35/2.8S
  • 70-200/4S
  • 24/2.8S TS
  • 45/2.8S TS
  • 85/2.8S TS

Hi!

Nice list!

Personally, I had been waiting for decades for an improved 1.7 TC in F mount. The current design is very outdated.. Specifically, the f mount 1.7 TC has not befitted from the optically improved and more recent 1.4 and 2x TC updates.

Also, I like to occasionally use a fisheye and would like to have a Z fisheye. (I have the 10.5 and 8-15 F mount versions)

Thanks again!

I still have an F-mount TC-14e from 1992, and I don't feel that the TC-14e III is all that much better. The TC-17e II (there is no version 1) came out around 2004, during the tail-end of the film era. In these days, I use my Z 1.4x TC once in a while, but for 1.7x, I think most people would just crop, perhaps cropping from the 1.4x TC.

Fisheyes can certainly benefit from the Z mount's short flange distance. It is a niche lens so that Nikon is probably not in a hurry introducing one.

16mm 2.8 please. 1.8 is all very well, but the old 2.8 D lens was so small and compact it made a brilliant street photography lens

Not my experience, nor the opinion of others including credible lens testers:.

The newer TC 14E has a different optical formulas than the iii version.

Overall slightly better contrast and significantly better corners

TC 14E vs TC14-iii

Cropping doesn't add detail. TC's can.

There are three versions of the TC-14e. The first two versions are optically identical and the III version (i.e. 3rd version) is different and is only compatible with G lenses. I have the first and third versions, and there is nothing newer than the third. I don't see a lot of differences between the two version I have. And when I use super teles, it is only for wildlife so that I don't particularly care about corner performance. Depth of field is shallow, anyway.

TC will also degrade the optics. Essentially it is a gradual degradation from 1.4x to 1.7x to 2x. For the Z mount, I don't even bother with the 2x TC. I use the 1.4x occasionally. I don't think there will be much of a market for any 1.7x TC.

It is a very different game now with digital. There are all sorts of software AI-enhancement tools to improve images, and few people still print. I essentially only view images on the computer or even phone screen nowadays.

IMO, for OEM Z lenses, I'd say:

35mm pancake (could be a slower one like 2.8 or 3.5).

35 1.2 (should be coming out this year),

70-300 with VR (maybe simmilarly priced as the AFP version or I guess the same as the Tamron would be fine if it has VR).

70-200 f4 (you mentioned this one; but also one with VR that maybe comes in around $1500 or less).

Yes I know we have some similar lenses in the line-up already like 70-180 but these are sort of staples I think that every brand and mount should have available as a native OEM option.

A fast 28 mm for street photography. If possible retro design to be used on the Zf.

Nikon should bring some old design lenses to the market as homage to the great Nikon heritage

But with aperture rings, thanks.

Small, lightweight, economical in the spirit of the 28 and 40 SE-lenses.

A 20 3.5 SE, as small as the Nikkor 20 3.5 MF.

A 24 2.8 SE, as small as the Nikkor 24 2.8 MF

A 35 2.0 SE

A 50 2.0 SE

An 85 2.0 SE

A 100 2.8 SE (or a 105 2.5 SE - in the spirit of the classic)

A 135 2.8 SE

A 200 4.0 SE

A 70-150 3.5 SE Zoom

And also, make a SE version of the 24 1.7 DX.

I bet we'll get an announcement for a 28mm f/1.8 this year. I'd consider buying one, though I prefer and am very happy with my 35mm f/1.8.

The lens I really want is the Z version of the AF-P 70-300. I gave up hope for it when Tamron was allowed to release one for Z mount (without VR), but now that Nikon and Tamron are both offering the 28-75 I'm once again hopeful.
