But if they indeed release a newmodel I hope they stick to their own design principles and NOT give it a 40MP sensor.
Which design principle is that?
Before I answer your question i first have to explain why (i think) 40mp on an APS-C sensor is not a good Idea.
1. 24mp is more than enough. No matter how big you print it, if viewed in full you will not be able to tell the difference between 24MP or 40MP
2. To be able to resolve 40MP on an APS-C sensor you need a very good lens. I don't think they can make such a lens and still make it as small as it is now. (I have already seen a youtuber who claims that his GRIIIx is sharper than his fuji X100VI.) And there is no point in giving it a higher MP sensor if the lens can't resolve it.
now to answer question:
There is a GR concept movie:
https://vimeo.com/292655045
at 2:25 they name 5 development principles
It is against principles 1 and 2
1 We do not compete in a number game using catalog specs.
2 We do not install a function only because it is a fad.
Now 2 is talking about a function and a 40mp sensor is of course not a function but if they would give there next GR a 40mp sensor they would probably have done that because fuji gave the X100 VI a 40mp sensor not because it is actually useful.
I don’t see 40mp sector as against their design principles . It’s just a number and if needed they will do it.
1 We do not compete in a number game using catalog specs.
Your opinions re. resolution v their lens resolution I’m not sure are based on anything we know to be a factual limitation of their lens design capabilities at this stage.
If you look at the size of high end lenses that are released by camera manufactures for there high end mirrorless camera's you see that the are huge. Much larger then DSLR lenses with the same focal length and the same max aperture (While they theoretically could be smaller than the dslr lenses.) These lenses need to be this big in order to be sharp enough for the higher MP camera's. So in order to resolve more MP you need a bigger lens.
I’m not an optics designer but the lens is sharper in the GR3 than the X100VI so is this always true for small focal length primes? I’m not sure it is.
You state that the lens of the GRIII is sharper than the lens of the X100VI. And you probably came to this conclusion because someone posted a link to dpreviews studio sene comparison tool with the X100V an the GRIII and you have seen that it is sharper. I have also seen that comparison but I do not share your conclusion.
It's not that I don't see that the image made with the GRIII is sharper. So yes indeed the GRIII that was tested did produce a sharper picture than the X100V that was used for the test image. But you cannot state that this is true for every GRIII compared to every X100V at every focal length at any distance.
I highly respect the Guys and Girls at dpreview. But I know that these test aren't always done properly.
Try comparing the Canon G9X to the Canon G9X II. These camera's have te same lens and the same image sensor so theoretically should give the same image quality. But in the comparison tool the G9X II is not sharp at all. So the G9X II that was used was probably a bad copy.
But the reviewer of the G9X II never made that comparison. He just concluded that the G9X II is not sharp.
At least one other reviewer unrelated to dpr has stated the same, comparing the X100VI to GR IIIx
??? So you are saying that if the lens of the GRIIIx is sharper than that one on the X100VI that proofs that the lens of the GRIII is sharper than the one on the X100V?
No. We might have been talking at cross purposes.
The GRIII and the GRIIIx have different lenses so I don't think it proofs anything.
You are right.
You are probably revering tho the X100VI review of Samuel Streetlife. Seen that one even posted a link on this forum.
If this review proofs anything (if Samuel is indeed right) than that's there is no reason to put a 40MP sensor in the next generation of GR'S because they are already produce sharper images than a 40mp X100VI. The original point I was trying to make.
Indeed. And I agree with you. We were talking at cross purposes.
