Are there any special reasons why PF optical elements could not be used on smaller sensors, like m4/3?

No. There may be some patents or some experience around designing/manufacturing them that differs between brands, but for long enough focal lengths (ie: where most light rays are perpedicular to the PF element, so don't risk hitting the edges of the 'teeth,' they can be used).

Interestingly, Sigma's recent 500mm lens is similar in size and weight to Nikon's old DSLR 500mm PF, despite not using any fresnel elements, so with no risk of the odd bokeh nd flare that could theoretically occur with PF lenses.

Thank you!  Seems like Sony, Nikon and Sony are on a roll with fast, light prime telephotos.  Would be great if m4/3 had similar offerings. 150-400 is great, but very expensive and not that light.
