The fourth camera in Leica's SL series of full-frame mirrorless cameras sees the 60MP BSI sensor from the Q3 and M11 models arrive with a significant interface redesign.
Time for a fixed lens compact, maybe?
I have for some time been enthralled by the large sensor fixed lens compacts. I used a borrowed GR for a few weeks some time ago and found it interesting. I never got to really use a Coolpix A, and have fondled a few X100s over the years. When Nikon teased the DL's, I tried to get on the pre-order for an 18-50DL, even though that sensor probably couldn't be described as "large."
When I see the community around the X100 and Ricoh GR, I think they've both capture something more than a passing fad. We might include Sony RX1 and Leica's Q on that list as well...
It's not all a "retro/nostalgia" or "street" vibe either, though there's room to lean into those worlds certainly.
That DL18-50 range certainly seemed intriguing, and Nikon's DX 12-28 comes very close, even if it's not that fast in absolute terms. In the same way the stillborn 18-50DL was quite a bit faster than the Nikon1 6.7-13mm (basically 2 stops: f/1.8-2.8 vs f/3.5-5.6) maybe it's possible to achieve a fixed lens DX design that is notably faster while not getting any larger? Do away with the mount and mechanical shutter and skootch the elements as close as possible to the sensor while digitally correcting some of the more egregious faults that might come from an aggressively small-fast design, and see what you get? Trim the wide or long ends a tad if needed? Whatever gets an equivalent 18-20ish wide end and a 35-45ish long end in f/2.8 guise or better.
Wrap it up with body controls long time Nikon shooters would understand, rationalized for the smaller size, and sure if the design might arouse users collective sense of nostalgia for some era/design/genre, that probably wouldn't hurt either. A Z-sp sister for the Z-f and Z-fc maybe?
