Flagship in name only

There’s oddly a lot of interest in the EOS M5 according to my Flickr search stats in 2024. Clearly there’s a lot of interest in 2nd hand use of Canons former M flagship.

.

Let me start out by stating some less obvious; the former EOS M3 is better at low light than the M5, consider the M3 over the M5 if you plan to shoot a lot in low light and are on a tight budget. The M6 mark II or R50 do better still.

.

The M50, M50 II, M6 II, M200 and now R10 and R50 are much better suited for action/sports/wildlife due to vastly superior autofocus if you’re on a budget and want to shoot Canon. Also the same offerings are vastly superior in video output due to having DIGIC8 or DIGICX which influences availability of video codecs and autofocus.

.

Where I’ll say the M5 starts to make sense is at the right price and if you plan to shoot largely stationary objects or controlled environments, or are “upgrading” from a former M. You should shoot RAW though or use custom WB if you’re a JPEG shooter.

.

Some samples which I’ve recently been updating due to interest.
