Lies, Lies, and Damned Lies.

A while ago I posted about a Benoist Berthiot Neo Cinestar that claimed to be an f2.1, but was actually an f2.55.

Yeah, well it seems that Benoist are not alone in telling honking big porkies about their lens apertures.

I saw a Golden Navitar 11" (279.4mm) f2.8 projection lens for sale, Hmm, I thought, a near 300mm f2.8 going for very little - I'm having some of that!

It defintely does not do what it says on the tin!

It arrived this morning and when I saw the size, I thought "no way". Sure enough, on measurement the front element is only 81mm in diameter, which gives a maximum possible aperture of f3.45.

Which is almost exactly a two thirds of a stop slower than f2.8 and much nearer to f4.

How do they get away with lies like that? I mean, they even engrave it on the lens!

In the UK they would be liable for prosecution for misrepresentation under the Sale of Goods Act.

Mind you, if it gives good bokeh when I've got it fettled, I might forgive them...

... a little.
