Just picked up my RF 200-800

Took it out for a quick check just in case, but it is well packed with a box inside the box. It handles very well for its size, though the tripod mount gets a little in the way for my left hand. It weighs about the same as my Sigma 150-600 C, now traded in, but it feels lighter. The Sigma was front heavy and this lens, despite a 95mm front element, is not. In a quick test involving twitchy little birds the eye AF on my R7 worked fine. It comes with a lens strap but for this quick check out just used my camera normally, strap on camera. However, I kept one hand holding the lens almost all the time. I would not let it hang, though I did let it hang for a second. No problem. If you are wondering how big the box is, maybe because you wonder how conspicuous you will look walking it to your car, it’s 16 inches tall by 8.5 inches on a side. Not too bad, and not heavy. At 200 mm unmounted it will sit nicely on its tripod mount on a table. At 800 it would tip forward. With the R7 mounted it will sit peacefully on a table at both 200 and 800mm. Haven’t put it on my tripod yet. Now if Canon would just knock off that Tamron 35-150 f/2-2.8…
