G9M2 shadow recovery (follow up thread) and caveats

We filled up the original thread.

Summary so far:

Photons to photons has uploaded the IQ data to their website.

There are significant differences in the camera modes labeled G9M2 and G9M2 (ES), which should stand for Electronic Shutter; this latter being quite worse than the mechanical one and on par with the GH6, i.e. worse than current MFT cameras when at low ISO values.

Some have found out that the shadow recovery in ES is equal to Mechanical.

It has also been found that the DR boost is off in the following cases:

Shutter longer than 0.8s (all shutter types), or

Shooting SH20, SH60, SH75 (only possible in ES)

Pictures showing this have been provided by at least 3 forum members.

Pictures from lens-cap ES and MS have been requested for photons to photons, at ISO 100.

They are here:

After playing with them in LRC, I think they will confirm the forum members, as they show very different result after doing +5 exposure in LRC if done <1sec vs. 1sec or longer, otherwise look identical ES to MS.

In addition, comparing high ISO of the G9 and EM5.3, it is difficult to find a difference other than the "quality" of the deep shadows.

At low ISO, the deep shadows of the G9M2 are cleaner, which we assume is the result of the DR boost. They also lack the color cast that older sensors typically show (purple for G9, green EM5.3). The advantage can be judged to be around 1 stop or a bit more.

The ISO100 in the G9M2 is 1 stop better at shadow recovery, and keep the same headroom of highlight recovery, so it is not "extended" as in fake.

Pics to play at many ISOs and shutter speeds and shutter types are here:
