Photographing the northern lights

Apologies if this is a dumb question.

I'm going to Iceland for a few days next week. One thing I am hoping to do is to see and photograph the northern lights. In the forums, I see mention about using long exposures and hence the need to take a tripod with me. However, I see that some people just use an iPhone etc to photograph them. I have an OM-1 with an OM 8-25mm F4 lens. Would I be able to take reasonable images handholding the camera? I will take a tripod if needed but I would rather travel light if possible.

Thanks

Mike
