55-200 for occasional outdoor portraits

I have the 55-200 and haven't used much.        At 3.5 @ 55mm it isn't the fastest lens in the world - but a tad faster then a 16-80/f4 or 18-55 @55mm.    When I shoot in studio I often stop down a bit to 5.6 for families where I need a bit more DOF.     When outside, I find I often like to shoot with a brighter aperture to create separation.    Given that min focus distance is about 3.5' I think I should be able to get nice OOF rendering as long as the background is a bit away from my subject.

Would love to see how you folks are using the 55-200 for outdoor portraits.

Thanks
