Question on how pre-capture works

I have always felt that some form of pre-capture mode should be required on any mirrorless camera, but got to thinking about how it might or might not work. I have no experience with it whatsoever.  Anyway, the point I just got curious about is how it handles focus. I have not established and locked in pre focus on a specific distance, does it just take the pre-capture shots at whatever distance the camera was already focused at?  It surely can't go  back and somehow magically apply the focused distance used on a particular shot to the pre-capture shots that it has in memory can it?

So now I have confused myself on it's importance.  I understand on a static subject, but suddenly have doubts of any success with moving subjects.  What experiences have people using it had?
