GND transition - dependent on front element size?

I've been thinking about whether to upgrade to an RF-S 11-22, if/when Canon releases on. Currently I'm using the 10-18 on my R7.

One thing that factors in is my love for GND filters. I really enjoy the process of using them. A question: Does the size of the lens' front element affect the "hardness" of the GND's transition zone?

I did a quick test using my 10-18mm at 18mm vs my sigma 18-35mm at 18mm. Here are the results:

I notice that the transition zone between dark and light is softer on the canon, which has a smaller front element size.

Does this track in terms of physics/experience/your understanding? (If so, I might not enjoy using the potential 11-22mm since it has an even smaller front element...)
