Why is Nikon not even in the top 5?

Well.. it would, of course, depend on how "Market Leader" is defined. Is it defined as between 2 and 3 megapixel, 3 to 4 megapixel, overall camera production, overall camera deliveries to wholesalers or camera deliveries to retailers, or perhaps camera deliveries to consumers. Perhaps it refers to innovatiions or numbers of new camera releases.

Don't get hung up on "market leader". What good is it to be the leader in the 1 megapixel class where Nikon doesn't compete? What good is it to be market leader in the 3 megapixel class if it only accounts for 20% of consumer purchases?

I can't imagine Fuji or Olympus dominating the market. They make fine product, but what is a market leader?
"The top five worldwide market leaders in 2003 are expected to be
Canon, Sony, Olympus, Fuji, and Kodak. The combined worldwide unit
market share of these companies is currently almost 75%. These
companies are expected to remain in the top five through 2004,
although their individual positions may change."

Well said.

And let's talk about resale...Canon releasing a new version of it's last camera with a small improvement every 6 months is certainly doing wonders for the value of the last camera or the one before it. LOL

Hey... Wha'ts that $1,600 D30 going for on the resale market that was new a year and a half ago?

Regards,

Julio
Who cares about these numbers, Porsche sells far less cars than
ford or honda.
Does that make the Porsche less a car?
Nikon makes quality not volume.
IF, you are really worried about the resale value of your nikon,
rather than how you will use it next. You might want to think about
another hobby.

Sore losers : p that's ok, you can still buy Canon cameras : )
Dear Nikon,

Please accept my sincere condolences for having lost the "digital
war" to that copier company down the street. If only you'd had
the forsight to drop a downscaled knockoff of your D100 without
proper testing onto an unsuspecting market in time to cash in on
some extra holiday sales, you'd still be around today. What were
you thinking?? It's not your customers that matter but the
opinions of marketing agencies, columnists and trolls from the
DPReview Canon forum.

I have to laugh at the won the war line. This would imply that
Canon is the only winner, and that Nikon (and others) has ceased to
exist. Not only has Canon NOT won the war, they still have quite
a battle ahead of them. Yes they have more camera models, and some
good ones at that, but that doesn't mean much other then they have
fired more shots in the battle. It doesn't mean they have won the
war. Phrases like that are just so much marketing hype to impress
the uninitiated.
I think they've lost in innovation, and lead, and market share, sure they're still around but for how long? The d2h just came out and all it proves is Nikon is only catching up to Canon's 1d two years down the line. They have no competitor for the Digital Rebel, nor the 1ds, there's no update for the d100, their lenses are late, no announcements for the d75, no d2x, meanwhile Canon is preparing their d2h killer which will be out in February.
Nikon is still a competitor, and I look forward to whatever they
bring out next.
It used to lead in dslr but I think has been slowly becoming marginalized and will continue to be marginalized as the dslr wars move on, Canon's advantage is that they're treating these dslr's like computers, Nikon like film cameras, thing is film cameras don't have the same refresh rate needed for computers.

BTW, Canon has only had their inexpensive DSLR out
for a short time. Hardly long enough to worry about in
competitive time frames. I can wait a little while longer to see
what Nikon does.
This holiday season will bring a lot of new customers, here in the Philippines more photographers are switching to canon or getting the rebel as their first dslr, you can bet the same thing is happening all over the world.
Besides, for now I have to concern myself with more weighty items
such as should I get the teleconverter or the battery pack for my
old and obsolete Nikon 5700? After all, I have had it for over a
year now. It is such an antique.

I like cameras, all cameras. Nikons, Canons, Sonys, Minoltas,
Hassleblads, Leicas, Toyo, and even Panasonics. But Canon has
not won the war, and Nikon has not lost it. I keep getting the
feeling that something special is going to come out from Nikon.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see. The battle still
rages.....
David, i suggest you switch, hell, Canon isn't so bad, too many pros use canon for Nikon to claim technical superiority, I think the only thing keeping Nikon alive is the solid reputation they got from their film cameras but it's a whole different ball game now.
PS before you respond, the numbers quoted are not coming from a
canon freak, but a respected marketing research company. Also
Shutterbug, a most respected professional camera magazine has
reached about the same conclusion in their last editorial...Canon
has won the dsrl war. Don't shoot the messenger, better write
Nikon and *****.

All of the SLR newbies are buying the 300D. This will have a trickle down effect in the long run because many future pros are beginners and now have the Canon name around their neck and are investing in the glass as well. Wev all know darn well that they are going to stick with that maker for your career! Being slow in the digital world means death. I already have two pro friends who crossed over to Canon. They have not gotten rid of the Nikon stuff yet because they still shoot film.

Tonight I looked at pix from the DH2 compared to the Canon 1D and the 1D was noticably better. The same subject was used, Unbelievable!

Perhaps in another year, Gateway or Dell will have trumped the
whole deck in terms of sales. It just depends on which is most
important to you - having the "market leader" hanging from your
neck, or capturing quality images.
Capturing quality images with the market leader of course!

That's cute and clever but sadly sounds like empty bravado. Insulting Canon and belittling it's achievements is similar to burying your heads in sand. It won't save Nikon.
Nikon rep; "Who do you think we are, Canon or somthing. We get it
right the first time".

unfortunately the camera of my choice does not exist yet. The camera of my choice would be an inexpensive Nikon SLR. While I'm wishing for things, it would also be made is such a way that it does not turn my great Nikon 20mm lens into 30mm lens. No, I'm not a troll, I'm just wishing Nikon would not try to treat digital cameras like film cameras. They are kidding themselves if they think a D100 will get as much milage as my FM2 has.

I think most of would love to have a new Hassleblad or Leica. These cameras have been some of the best ever made for years and years. In all of that time neither one of these cameras has ever been a "market leader" in tearms of sales volume.

Which product do you want?

The one that sells the most, perhaps one of those disposable cameras from the drug store?

Or a nice Leica M7

Or maybe you would pick the digital camera produced by the makers of the vidio games or copy machines over the one made be the camera company.

after looking at your posts, I can see you are not a troll. I can also understand what you are looking for, but realize that this digital photography stuff is relatively new, and changes are being made on a continuous basis. You have companies like Canon that puts out a new model with every change, and then Nikon which likes to take its time and develop a photography tool for the long haul ( specifically in the higher end models)

There never will be a perfect camera. Choose one that does what you want, feels good in your hands, and I am sure you will be happy. I got the 5700 as I didnt want to spend over $1000. It isnt perfect, but what a great camera. NIkon, Fuji, Canon - make doesnt matter if it suits your needs. I understand wanting to be able to use your nikon glass, so fuji is a possibility too.

I do have the urge for dslr, but will wait till at least 8mp is the norm, and perhaps the 1.5x magnification factor isnt a factor anymore. But, on the otherhand, for wildlife its nice to have a 300mm lens that gives you 450mm. It's all relative, one way or the other, I'll need to get some new lenses.

Good luck with your hunt.

Nikon's latest annual report states "We plan to extend this range of cameras further to develop SLR-type digital cameras that will appeal strongly to the average consumer. We have now developed a strong position at the high-end consumer digital camera market. Our next goal is to extend this franchise to target middle-class and popular-class markets, while continuing to pay attention to brand loyalists."

Hurry up Nikon. I'm waiting.

It bothers me that Canon is releasing their stuff ahead of schedule
while Nikon is delaying theirs. Will the pendulum swing back around
soon, or do you think I should sell my Nikon SLR stuff while I can
still get a decent price for it? Just kidding, sort of. Any
thoughts?

:-(
I would like to know.

In my opinion Nikon is very serious when decide to release a new product, that's why you don't see something like D100, D200, D300, 100D and much more.

I have an old N90 bought many years ago and It is still a very respected camera, unlike other brands, Nikon has a good resaling market because of this responsability.
If you buy any camera you can be shure it will not be obsolete very fast.
By the way ... Ferrari have never been in the best sellers list ...hehehe
