is it worth going from a74 to a7r5?

Is it worth the 1k in price to switch? I Like the a74 but if the a7r5 is better :)
Ultrasonic sensor cleaning.

https://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2230/v1/en/contents/TP0003057068.html?search=ultrasonic

Still don't know if ultrasonic cleaning triggers automatically or only explicitly activated in settings.

Do notice occasionally with powering OFF my A7RV makes a clunk/shutter sound.
You just have to love manuals written by engineers (I am an engineer).

Having used Olympus cameras for years, the A7Rv is the first Sony body that appears to have IBIS and sensor cleaning that really work, at least in theory.

Andrew

sensor cleaning page states

"Cleaning may be performed automatically when the power is turned off."

So I guess it does self clean? shrugs.

I came from Fuji and never had dust issues with it's automatic sensor vibration. They also have settings to turn on/off automatic cleaning on power. Then again never had dust issue with any camera even without IBIS vibration since I only swap lens in clean environment).

I've had lots of spots on my A7Riv which only has vibration. They are usually easy enough to blow off, but I'd rather the camera cleaned itself when I switch off & on, like my EM1.1 and OM1.

At first I thought you were asking about going from the A7RIV to the A7RV, and the answer is an emphatic yes - you lose nothing (except money!), and gain so much. I had no regrets upgrading my A7RIV to A7RV.

From the A7IV, though, it is more complicated:
  • do you want more detail (or will you whine about file sizes?) ?
  • is video important to you?
  • will improved IBIS help you?
  • Do you photograph subjects where the AF in the A7IV struggles?
the AF never struggles :-)
It is a good step up, but if affording it is a challenge, then don’t do it.
If affording it is not difficult, then it’s worth considering.

The new AF is really good, but if you are happy with the existing AF, you may wonder why you bothered.

The new rear screen and new EVF are both excellent, but definitely “nice to have”, not “must have”.

The new IBIS has been reported to be useful to some reviewers - I tend not to use slow shutter speeds.

The high pixel count that lets me crop heavily is why I bought the A7RIV, but when combined with the extra sharp focus in the A7RV, it is even more useful.

What is important to you?

detail and sharpness. Better looking screen. I want a camera thats gonna last a long time. Recording seems better for the V i do recording and pics. At this point ive had the 4 for 20 days i can still refund for 100% instead of getting down the road and sayi9ng omg i dont want his now im stuck.

I do like the 4 its very nice but can it be better?
Apart from the obvious resolution and tilt/flip screen, the two biggest improvements are: AF and IBIS.

The AF is much improved over the A74 in terms of subject detection (e.g. in wide area mode). You can now finally use the joystick to choose which subject to track which is a first for Sony.
I have the A7IV and the R5. The R5 has it, the A7IV doesn't have it. I'm missing it on my A7IV.
You also now get full time DMF with any lens (except my Tamron for some reason).
Interesting. I was thinking about the 70-180mm f/2.8 or 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8, but this makes it less appealing to buy one of those.
IBIS is also vastly improved - you really need to try it to see how much better it is.

I bought the A74 when it came out and thought its AF was great, till I got the 7R5.

Downsides are larger file sizes and more rolling shutter (if you use electronic shutter).

Can't comment on video.

Hell yes! The viewfinder is a world of difference. I kept my IV because I work events mostly for now and need two bodies. The IV is still great but if you can only keep one, get the RV. The new screen mechanism along with what everyone else mentioned.

I share your sentiment about glass, that's what makes the picture after all. But I am surprised you find so little "marginal" difference between these cameras.

#1. You can use small RAW on your A7r5, which should give you very clean 26MP files. And in crop mode, you also get 26MP files - so this is almost like an in-build 1.5x tele converter, giving all your lenses double duty. Especially for events photographers this should be great.

#2. It's the new IBIS sounds like a game changer.

To me, these two are the main reasons to upgrade from A7r3 to A7r5. Could you please comment whether my expectation regarding #1 and #2 are in the right ball park?

Don't bother. The OP posted this yesterday.

He's realized that it takes more than buying a fancy camera to become a professional.

not really i never said i shot like a professional. Not sure where this negative energy is coming from. I simply had a bunch of bills so i didnt think i could afford 7k in camera gear. So i actually do have a limit that i can spend. I am new and im enjoying learning and i do think learning with good equipment is key. you can think of me as you will i am making the best decision for ME. Do i wanna be a pro of course and i will be someday. Im asking for opinion not this guy is a jerk cause he wants to give a camera back and wants to be a fancy pants. Very childish reply mr jaq.

I didn't say you did. It seemed pretty clear, though, from the beginning that you were aspiring to shoot professionally.

Anyway, I've since taken a more sympathetic approach with you and offered lots of advice in response to your requests for help on your zig-zagging journey.

I'm surprised you still feel this way after all the constructive responses I've offered of late. Sorry if I hurt your feelings. I misinterpreted your motivations at first, but I've since repented and sought to make amends by trying to offer useful information even as I've been mystified by your line of questioning.

You cant go wrong with the a74 33meg is miles for cropping any image at any size, the a7r5 is just all fluff :-) do your self a favour and crop to 3000% between the a74 and r5 and tell me if you can see any difference.

It's a superb camera and I am sure you will enjoy it.

Jacques Cornell is a professional photographer, and we are very lucky to have him here - I am going to miss his excellent and always constructive advice very much. This loss of community is the worst thing about the coming demise of this website.

".... that it takes more than buying a fancy camera to become a professional." - could not agree more! It usually is amateurs who feel the need to buy the latest and greatest, pros know that cameras are just tools and have the knowledge and skills to work with what they have and deliver the results his/her clients expect. I am sure you will find out that the A74 is more than enough for your ambitions to become a pro some day.

So Mr. Cornell, if you are reading this, thank you very very much from the bottom of my heart! I learned a lot from your numerous comments in these forums.

Unless there is a specific need, ~I think the money is better spent on glass. I had the iv then Rv - I am not sure I didn't like the iv more. Either way it is marginal.

Hi

Sorry, only just saw this.

OK, #1 - I don't use S and M raw, nor APSC mode, so I can't really comment. APSC mode is just cropping, and without reading back I think (hope) I mentioned cropping as one of the advantages if you need that in your work. Cropping capability might be the best reason to change in fact. M raw I don't use because most of what I read says there is a penalty in IQ. I don't care about file sizes, so I'd rather just shoot in raw and have done, YMMV

#2, IBIS. I don't know about this - Sony IBIS isn't the best generally, the A7Rv seems like it may be a little better, but not massively noticeably so for me - but I haven't scientifically tested it, so again you might find it more useful. I was shooting for a while with the Hasselblad X2D. Now THAT has 7 stops plus of IBIS - it is incredible what you can hand hold, and is really clearly observable. The A7Rv doesn't feel the same.

I think my main point is that people (me too) lock on to the spec differences between the LCDs and EVFs, and the fancy screen - but whilst they are of course nice improvements, they don't materially affect the user experience for me, and they certainly don't affect the image output. When I look back over images from my A7iv and this A7Rv, there is nothing that makes me prefer the v images when viewed globally - in fact I think the colours are slightly nicer out of the iv.

Are you mostly cropping at your longest focal length because you don't have enough reach, or are you misjudging at shorter focal lengths and then having to crop later?

You can buy a used a7RIV for about the same price as a used a7IV.

That's really disappointing about the IS. I was thinking that an A7Rv might be a single solution if anything catastrophic ever happened to my kit. Real sensor cleaning was another attractive step up from my A7Riv.

I think that the OM1 will continue as the handheld camera for a lot longer.
