I went with the R7+ RF 100-400 and think it's the obvious path for entry-level wildlife/birds. Small, light, relatively inexpensive, and as a native RF lens focus is fast and accurate. I plan on adding a longer lens - probably either the Sigma 60-600 or 150-600, but maybe the RF 100-500 if some $$$ spontaneously appear.
Thanks. This sounds like good advice, but will have to wait I guess to get enough money for both. I don't think the RF 100-400 is backwards compatible with my old Canon?
The EF 100-400 IS will work with your DSLR today and can be adapted to the R series cameras. Both the original and the II version of this lens are superb, and with the number of people jumping to the RF lenses, you ought to be able to get a deal on a used 100-400. And if you are willing to take a chance with a lens which might have a minor scratch on the lens ( which Roger Cicala has said rarely affects image quality) you can get an even bigger bargain. Most used camera shops will let you buy a lens and return it if you are not happy with it.
