DPReview Shutdown Thread

Joined pretty late, but I’ve learned a lot here the past couple years. I understand exposure in a way I never did (to the point where I avoid such threads now 😁).

My wife will appreciate its demise. I won’t get nearly as many new ideas to spend money on. Oh well. Lots of good folks here that I will miss learning from or just seeing what they’re shooting.

This was my go-to photography stop for years. Not sure what I'm going to do now. Maybe take another look at Fred Miranda or Luminous Landscapes, but it won't be the same.

I wonder if Amazon looked into selling the site or starting a subscription model? Too bad this door is being closed with no similar options.

Thanks to all the mods for all of your work over the years and thanks to the other members for making this a great place to hang out.

In order to prevent a dozen similar threads, this thread will act as the thread to discuss DPR closing its doors. Other threads will be locked. General thoughts also welcome, but hopefully community members can discuss other forum options moving forward.
Is there another forum that everyone is going to be going to?

Members of some forums want to discuss where else to go and one single thread - which will hit its limits quickly is counterproductive.

And as someone who has been here for 19 1/2 years, I feel like someone has died. I'm furious with Amazon for this. Especially after the closure of the smile.amazon charity service.

Another shut down that does not make sense. Great site, great forums. Even if you disagree with the Reviews or the Forums, it's still the ONE place to go and discuss photo items. Other FM types of sites are nice sites but to me, not as good or all encompassing as this one.

Has the photography market outside of cell phones really shrunk so much that a dedicated site is not viable ?

If the Finances don't makes sense from advertising dollars, why not at least offer a Subscription Model, or even require Amazon Prime to access the site ??

MANY thanks to all who have and are working here. I know it doesn't put money in your pocket next month, but great job and much appreciation.

Why would you shut down threads about where to go next on the various forums?? Makes ZERO sense! Please reconsider!

Best,

M

Not making enough money, eh?

I mean, is there really nothing we can do about it ? Is that really the only way to present it ? Just put us before the fact ?

Some business people have made a decision and no one else has a voice and options?
I don't believe it works like that.

This is not how things are done in developed societies. This is caricature capitalism in the style of some unoriginal dystopia. This is a tale of some naive cynic. Come on guys.

Let's discuss this. I don't know, we'll make some kind of statement from the community or something like that. I honestly have no idea how this is done, but I know that something needs to be done.

That's very sad news. If the reason is operating cost, why not at least keep the forum?

How did the F this all up???

DPR started when I purchased from first digital. Looks like it's ending right when my photography is ending. Love it, hate it, it's been a wild 23 years during which I traveled the world, my photography improving with every trip. An obsessive journey in which I invested too much time and money.

So sad! I'm not that active, but still check the threads every morning, just like reading the paper. The morning won't be the same.

Wonder what this means for photography in general. I don't know of any other sites like this.

no, I won't return to read your witty reply!
professional cynic and contrarian: don't take it personally

Unlike Luminous Landscape, PhotoPXL is run by a photographer. It would be great to see more traffic on his site.

Members of some forums want to discuss where else to go and one single thread - which will hit its limits quickly is counterproductive.
Agreed. Every existing forum is going to have its own "Where do we go now" discussion. That can't all happen in a single thread.
And as someone who has been here for 19 1/2 years, I feel like someone has died. I'm furious with Amazon for this. Especially after the closure of the smile.amazon charity service.
Aside from the discussion forums the camera and lens sections are a great resource. I hope they find a home somewhere!

Bummer. I came here full time when Jeff Keller shutdown DCRP in 2012. It has been a great place for travel suggestions and information on things like bags which are so hard to find in person these days. I guess it will save me some money in the long run.

DPReview has several elements:
- the editorial content (articles, reviews): For which you obviously need staff.
- the forums: the value of the forums is the "wisdom of the crowds". Several ten-thousands of users contributing.

Maybe reviews can be found elsewhere.

BUT: has there been any discussion of preserving the forums?

I am pretty sure many members of the DPR-community would be willing to assist (moderation) in running the forums. If DPR would be willing to hand over the forums to the community:
- financing: would be an issue (server/bandwidth), but can be solved (donations, sponsoring)
- running the forums: moderation by voluteers, well-established members of the community
- tech support: there are many users with an IT background in the forums

I think I am writing for many users here who see a lot of value in the forums. And we'd love to see the DPR-forums in the future.

Is the idea naive?
