I suspect it's this: Whole Area Tracking Servo AF
I’m set up this way as well. When I press the shutter half way the entire AF area is active. If I can’t get the subject I want info I press a BFF to activate a non eye AF mode. My preference is single point AF
I picked this method up watching his R3 video shootout. I may be missing something but it has been very effective for me. I override eye AF to get my subject in focus first then I flip to Eye AF.
I’d be interested in a new technique. I’m not getting how Expansion AF flips to full Eye AF by just keeping the shutter half pressed.
I'm curious as well, I only have an 'old' R5, which lacks the fancy new AF features of the R3/R7/R10/R8/R50/R6II.
On my R5 I get text in the EVF when I enable/disable eye-AF, do you get the same on your R7?
I suspect he leaves continuous AF (or preview AF now) active. Then when he half presses the shutter, the eye / face detect kicks in on whatever is under the preview AF area. Notice the expanded area AF is grey, not blue or green.
Good point and it might be it. I have used AF preview since owing the R5 (Initial AF) and use it with my R7 and R6II. That still won't place AF on a subject I want within a group of subjects. It will pick the best eye. Or if AF is way out it may not hone in on the subject. Either way his videos led me to using my technique which with my current tech is invaluable to me. In a second I can pick any eye I want in a crowd.
He uses it here quite a bit. Minutes 2:30 to 6:00. 3:10 has the best example. Not sure how he manages to focus on the body, get it into focus and the flip to eye AF. Using the AF Preview activates the white pre-focus square which looks like this.
