I can imagine that it is Canon trying to protect themselves from a user complaining that some type of weather related damage occured because they didn't use the AD-E1.  I suppose that using the AD-E1 is the safest way to mount the GP-E2...or maybe it is because Canon wants everyone to buy an extra piece of gear....and make a bit more profit.  Could be either or both.
