Does anyone of you use the Canon GPS unit GP-E2 on the R7 without using the Canon multifunction shoe adapter AD-E1?

Canon says that the AD-E1 shoe adapter is required to mount the Canon GP-E2 unit on the R6 Mkark II, R7, R8 and R10.

The GP-E2 works without the AD-E1 present although the lock lever does not go all the way. Will mounting the GP-E2 without the AD-E1 damage the multifunction shoe on the R7?

I've used the GP-E2 both with and without the AD-E1 adapter, and it seems to work fine either way. As far as I'm aware, the only real purpose of the AD-E1 adapter is to make the connection between the camera and the device more dust- and water-resistant.

At least with my gear, the lock lever of the GP-E2 locks as firmly with the camera (directly) as it does with the adapter. The lock lever is a tiny bit stiffer when attaching the GP-E2 directly to the camera, but it does lock.

Thank you for the reply.  I was scrared to push the locking lever too hard.  After reading your reply, I tried and it did lock after a firm press.  I can see the multifunction shoe is a bit longer than the old kind on my R so the rubber seal does not cover the whole shoe.

I wonder why Canon says the AD-E1 is required as if the GP-E2 won't fit or work without it.  Perhaps Canon should say it is only required to complete the weather seal.
