The RF 24-105mm STM is seen as an affordable, small, lightweight kit lens for larger bodies like the R, R6 and R5.

The R did it correct at the beginning with the 24-105 f/4 being the kit lens. The STM is a joke for a body like the R5 or R6 II. 4000$ camera, "100$" lens. Nikon has more decency with the 24-70 f/4 or 24-120 f/4 being the kit lens for the higher end bodies.

As a result the Nikon Z 24-70 f/4 can be bought for like 300-400$ in mint condition, Canon probably wanted to prevent that for the 24-105 f/4, which is now selling for 1300$, which is actually a bit crazy. The RF 24-50 will be even cheaper than the 24-105 STM, but some people just like to shoot dark, cheap lenses on a high end fullframe body instead of buying a more suited system (e.g. Fuji APS-C, R7, ..).

I don't see anything wrong with providing consumer options. The 24-105 f4 is the only kit lens for the R5 where as the R6/R6II can be had as a kit with either the 24-105 f4 or 24-105 f4-7.1 (source Canon Mirrorless Cameras: EOS | Canon U.S.A, Inc.)

Ah, I am actually glad that the R5 is not being bundled with the STM, unlike MikeJ mentioned.
