Anyone care to speculate why this seems to be the case? I wouldn't think there was a technical limit on mirrorless that makes ultrawide zooms more difficult to design than for DSLRs.

There’s not a technical limit. Just no desire by Canon. The only answer I have is perhaps they consider zoom lenses that start at 24mm, a luxury, and reserve them for luxury offerings, think L, FF, G series power shots. Canon broke with that with the EF-M 15-45, but that’s it. Perhaps that was to counter competition, which APS-C competitors right now consist of Fuji, which the R8 has pretty much silenced.

If you must have a zoom that starts at 24? R8, or M, or Fuji. Sonys rumored to be up to something with crop shortly. We’ll see…
