Firmware updates that offer extended product features are always welcome. Canon must want to make current unsold stock more attractive to new buyers.

I wonder if the R5mk2 is not production ready or it’s release has been stalled to allow old stock R5 bodies to clear through first at full RRP.

You mentioned something I think makes a lot of sense, the Nikon Z8. If I were on Canon retention team, I would want to hold on to as much of Nikon's market share as I could. There are going to be a lot of Nikon converts looking over to the Z8/Z6III with interest. Minimizing the number of people that bleed back over could be a very good reason to throw the kitchen sink at an feature rich FW update. IMO, the only reason to do so.
