Morris,

Are you able to get most of your bird and wildlife shots using the Nikon 500mm hand held? I'm thinking of getting a used Fuji 100-400mm and am hoping I can mostly use it without a tripod.

Hi Greg,

I could do this and used to when I was shooting Nikon bodies with a 100-400mm.  I view tripods as a huge advantage as they allow me to let the planet support my equipment so that I come home less tired, even when I'm walking most of the time.  Shooting off a tripod allows me to stay on a subject and wait for interesting behavior.  Most people can not keep a camera pointed at a subject for long periods of time and thus let the camera down.  When they see interesting behavior they have to lift the camera, focus and compose.  By the time they do this there is a good chance the opportunity is gone.  All I have to do shooting off a tripod is trip the shutter.  A tripod with gimble also allows for much slower shutter speeds and better pan shots.
