I find if things are moving it's mostly good but if they are reasonably stationary then I sometimes have problems.

My 100-400 is really bad for this. I recently rented the 150-600 and didn't experience this problem once.

Having owned and used both lenses, I think you will find the upgrade to the 150-600 to be pretty huge, both in terms of consistent IQ across the FL range and subject tracking.  The additional reach is also a big plus if your subject matter is birds or other smaller wildlife.
