The customisation was in the BBF detail. I think of the case settings as something you can call up in the BBF. So I set the features I want for each case, then request them via BBF. It is a great bit of design by Canon but they don’t explain it too well in the manual. In fact today I was in a hide discussing just this. My friends was complaining whatever he was setting in case 2, the camera was not behaving how he felt it should. That was because his BBF setting was calling up case 1. He went from frustrated to really happy.

So in AF I have these settings for Case 2.

When I first had BBF setup the detail page showed this. The line “Servo AF characteristics” was set to 1, which means that button is using case 1 instead of case 2. Not very well worded menu item I felt.

If you click in that it brings up another page which does make things clear, and it is there I select my desired case, 2 this time.

Hope that makes it clear.

I can't find the setting on my R7. I use bbf but when I assign the af-on button for eye af the info button is not active so I can't see those settings. Is i only a thing in full frame cameras like r6 and r5?

All those screen grabs I took directly from my R7 so you are probably just looking in the wrong place. The last two screenshots can be found in the menu when you are customising the buttons, they are not in the AF settings menu.

Go to the Orange 3 menu and when you customise the button you are using for BBF you will see “Info Detail Set” in the bottom left. Pressing the Info button brings these up. More details here - https://www.distinctlyaverage.co.uk/308-my-canon-r7-wildlife-setup?start=5

Thanks for the reply. So If I set the af-on button for eye-af, the info detail set is not active. That was how I set it to this day. Just eye af for bird eye. Now I can set the fist option on the list which is af start and press the info detail and choose options. Which is better? And what is spot detection on the list?

This is very interesting information. I have a R5, and when I select eye AF when assigning BFF, I also dont get the detailed menu, but I do get the detailed menu when I select AF start. I have the AF-on configured for start AF and the * button configured for eye-AF. for the AF-on (AF start) selection, my detailed menu also provides "-" as a selection when means maintain current settings.

I sampled a few of my photos in DPP, and when I press AF-on button for the photo, DPP reports for the photo that servo AF: case 2, subject to detect: animals, AF area select mode:AF point expansion surround (which is my current configuration in the AF selection menu). When I used the * button, DPP reports servo AF: Case 2, Subject to detect: animals, AF area selection mode: Face detection + tracking AF. so it appears that on my R5, when * is configured for eye-af, it is using my selected case 2 (with the proper tracking sensitivity to -2).

But the question that Olcayk asked is still valid - is it better to setup BFF to start AF, and dial in the settings you want for it with the detailed menu?

Shawn

I think it all depends on what you want. I do it this way so I can have different settings on different back buttons. Using the detail gives me that flexibility. Not everyone needs or wants that as it may not suit their style of working. I simply detail what is working for me and honestly feel there is no best way except the one that works for you.
