IPhones have had built in GPS since at least the iPhone 3GS. There is simply no excuse for Canon not having GPS in EVERY EOS R series camera. The situation is ridiculous.

The GPS in iphones (and other phones) has been half a GPS, a so called Assisted GPS or A-GPS. It needs data from the cellular network to get a fix, it won't work without reception. You can get a fix first and then move away from reception, but that's a bit hit and miss.

Would you like to need a SIM card and subscription to use GPS in 'EVERY EOS R series camera'? I certainly wouldn't!

That's not true at all.

All phones are able to get GPS fix without any GSM signal. The assisted mode makes the fix faster is some conditions and sometime (especially inside buildings) makes the fix a bit more precise (especially with WiFi enabled). But there is no need to have GSM for GPS to work perfectly.
