IPhones have had built in GPS since at least the iPhone 3GS. There is simply no excuse for Canon not having GPS in EVERY EOS R series camera. The situation is ridiculous.

The GPS in iphones (and other phones) has been half a GPS, a so called Assisted GPS or A-GPS. It needs data from the cellular network to get a fix, it won't work without reception. You can get a fix first and then move away from reception, but that's a bit hit and miss.

Would you like to need a SIM card and subscription to use GPS in 'EVERY EOS R series camera'? I certainly wouldn't!

that is not correct.

I use my old Android phones (Samsung S4 and S5) for GPS tracking and navigation.

Neither phone has a SIM card. I use a simple (free) app to generate .GPX track logs with which I later tag my photos in Lightroom.

No SIM or any kind of network connection is needed for the phones to gain a GPS location fix.

Then you're in luck! The iPhone 3GS that was used as an example in the post I responded to can't do that. I suspect modern phones stopped using Asssisted GPS and started using a full GPS implementation.
