I think Canon put out the R7 with less abled features to get the 1.6x crowd into mirrorless but will quickly upgrade it to the R7 MK2 in under 2 years.

That makes little sense when you consider the large number of 7D Mark II uses who waited years for a 7D Mark III and then waited some more years in anticipation of an R7 which would be a worthy successor in all respects - but in reality arguably fell short in a number of areas (buffer size, readout speed, battery grip, EVF, shutter shake, weather sealing, ergonomics . . . )

Buffer size is a little disappointing, but the 7DII didn't have one that big either, it just was slower. Shooting in CRAW and the buffer is less of an issue, especially in EFCS or MS. Readout speed is only an issue in very few circumstances - in most cases you won't even notice - it is just a poster value that does help when playing trump cards. Battery grip is only something for a minority of the R7 users, I would say only a small proportion would purchase this option and thus the added investment of adding the connectors probably wasn't worth it to Canon. They build their cameras with certain target audiences in mind. As for the weather sealing - how well do you maintain the gaskets in your lens? Have you ever sent them in to be serviced for that purpose? If not, then you aren't bothered by weather sealing and only list this because you need to be negative about something. I have used the 7DII for 8 years (got one on the day of the initial release) and never have used it without additional weather gear because not all of my lenses are weather sealed and those that are were bought mostly second hand and thus I have no knowledge how well their gaskets have been maintained. Thus there is a big gaping hole in the sealing...Have you seen the videos of Wild Alaska? He was using the R5 alongside the R7 on one trip in atrocious weather and the weather sealed R5 conked out first IIRC.

Compared to the mirror slap of the 7DII the shutter shock in the R7 is minute and the ergonomics are so well thought out that I am now - after 2 months of sparse usage (our weather has been atrocious) - prefer the R7 ergonomically to the 7DII... I was worried about the on/off/video switch but it is less of an issue than I thought, the new thumb wheel placement feels very comfortable and natural. Maybe let go of the attachment to the 7DII - I had to because it is on it's way out, worn out...

Yes I bought the R7 but am still using my 7DII. I would have paid another $1,000 for a better R7 if it was indeed a 7DII successor

Not that many would have done that.

And now you're suggesting the Canon 'strategy' is to have us wait again for the next model before we see the true mirrorless 7DII successor . . .

There will not be a mirrorless 7DII successor. The R7 ticks that many boxes that only a very few people would wait.
