If it's true that Sony owns a chunk of Tamron I doubt Canon will have anything to do with them.

But I could be wrong.

Sony is the largest shareholder in Tamron

The second largest shareholder in Tamron is also the largest shareholder in Nikon.

Whether that means anything in relation to Canon is debatable, but Sony in particular and Nikons major shareholder, benefit from Tamrons lens sales, irrespective of any licensing deals.

Sony owns 14.8% of Tamron, which is too low to allow Sony to consolidate Tamron’s earnings on their income statement. In other words, Tamron can turn in ten billion dollars of profit and it wouldn’t register squat on Sony’s financial results except for the portion that Tamron pays out to the shareholders as dividend. My quick calculation shows that Tamron’s dividend to Sony for this past financial year would be…(drum roll please)…about $3M USD. It’s more than pocket change, but hardly an amount that would justify lost sales to their own lens business.
