I was having a similar problem with my R7, using my EF 100-400 MKII with 1.4x MKIII. I almost always shoot from my car when I’m not shooting in the yard. And I almost always have the car turned off. My shots without the extender were often soft, and with the extender, we’re always soft.. I updated my firmware, then reset the camera to factory defaults, including custom button and dial settings. Then I set everything back up again and went for a drive with the camera. It was night and day. It may or may not work for you, but it worked for me. Oh, and I have almost always shot in EFCS mode. Hope you get it solved on your R7.

Do you think it was just updating the firmware that did it? Or do you think that resetting to factory defaults, and then setting up again, was a factor? After you reset to defaults, did you set up all the buttons and dials with the same settings as before? It would be weird if doing this had any effect, but these cameras are so complex, who knows what makes a difference? I have not updated the firmware on my R7 since getting it (it's still on 1.0.1), but probably should at some point.
