I wonder how far we are through the life of relevant RF mount patents which Canon has in place to protect their intellectual property on the mount design? Does anyone know? I couldn’t find much on Google. RF mounts were announced about 5 years ago, so I guess at least 1/4 of their life has passed, perhaps significantly more?

Patents last 20 years, both in Japan and the US. The clock is ticking as soon as the patent is accepted, so the RF mount and its associated systems would have been patented before the first R camera and RF lenses were released in 2018. I wish I knew more, but sadly I'm no patent attorney, ODB.

To add, it also depends on which specific parent is a hurdle here. It may have predated the mount, or may be something after mount came about but wasn't reverse engineered yet

It's all speculation anyway, no one knows what the real deal is. All we hear is people making up a reason and trying to force it as the only obvious explanation
