Denying options to those already invested in Canon may initially put more beans in the pot; but when potential new buyers become aware that Canon offers them fewer options than both Sony or Nikon, Canons stance may turn out to be "Penny wise-Dollar foolish".:-|

According to Canon financial documents, last year they sold 2.86 million interchangeable lens cameras, resulting in a (2.86 / 5.85) 49% ILC market share. Apparently new buyers haven't gotten the word about the "lens crisis".

Nikon has a 12% ILC market share, so they aren't any threat to Canon. Sony doesn't publish specific numbers, so that is an unknown.

If Canon discovers that the current lens policy hurts their profits, they will change it.

Yep.  Somehow Canon is very confident in their body and lens designs bringing in the buyers.  Canon, a traditional camera company, confidence is to the constant horror of Sony owners with their 3rd party budget lenses.
