Hello all,
I am a bird/wildlife hobbyist photographer and considering upgrading to Fuji X-H2s w/ 150-600 from my current Canon 7Dm2 w/ EF 400mm f/5.6 setup.
- How is the conventional focus i.e single point or group of single points in centre (like in 7D mark 2), especially for tracking birds in flight where you hold down back button AF and click images tracking the bird in AF continuous mode. Note - I do not plan to use subject detect.
- Has anyone moved from 7D mark 2 to Fuji X-h2s out here for Wildlife/Birds? Thoughts? Anything you miss from 7D mark 2?
Thanks,
Rudy.
Hi Rudy,
I'm an ex Nikon photographer and have been doing birds in flight for over 20 years and for the past few years with Fuji. I've tried out Canon cameras so understand the setup you currently are using. What you want to do will work just fine and can produce excellent results. While this old tried and true method will work, I suggest that you consider approaches that will also get great results with less effort. At the very minimum use zone (group) AF rather than single point. Subject detection will do a superb job yet you don't have to use it. If you switch you can start doing exactly what you have though I suggest experimenting and see what you like best.
You can adapt your Canon EF 400mm f5.6 L to work with the X-H2s and have a native glass experience by using this adapter made by Fringer:
https://www.fringeradapter.com/canon-ef-to-fujifilm-x
The only downside to the Fringer adapter is that it dose not have weather seals. The Fuji XF 150-600 has a maximum aperture of f8 at the long end and this will be a limitation for shooting on the darker side of the magic hours. Otherwise it's a fast focusing and sharp lens with decent bokeh. I use a Nikon 500mm f5.6 adapted with a different Fringer brand adapter and am super happy with the results I get.
I've created a very popular setup for BIF with the X-H2s and following it will get you great results quickly:

Good luck,
Morris
Thanks a lot Morris, pretty much answers my query.
A bit of weather sealing is important for me. I am also looking at Fuji 100-400 & Tamron 150-500 lens as well.
I think I should be ok with f/8, as I am used to the noise in 7d mark ii. I except the Fuji sensor being new, to be atleast 1/2 a stop better in noise perf, should be manageable.
One of my main reasons to upgrade is to do some run & gun video when there is an opportunity, which really is very basic 7d mark ii, managed the following:

Thanks again for the detailed response.
Rudy.
I use a rain cover when necessary when using Fringer adapters. There are a number of good software options to address high ISO noise. Fuji's noise is less bothersome than that of some camera's. Sometimes I leave the noise as it's can be a nice effect. There are a few people using the Tamron 100-500 with good results. I used to use the Fuji 100-400 and it's a fine lens. Add the 1.4x TC and it's great for portraits yet AF and tracking are subpar with the TC. If you want the weather seal, the Tamron 100-500 and any of the Fuji's are the way to go.
Have fun!
Morris
Thanks Morris. Not a big fan of any adapters or TC. Probably would be more of a toss up between the Fuji 150-600 or Tamron 150-500.
You have been very helpful, appreciate it.

We're Noct messing around with this review.
Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom impress in a lot of ways, but their noise reduction lags the competition and their lens corrections lack a real-world basis. DxO PureRAW 3 aims to come to their rescue without totally reinventing your workflow!
The Sony ZV-E1 is the company's latest vlogging-focused camera: a full-frame mirrorless camera based the FX3/a7S III sensor, aimed at YouTubers and 'creators' looking to go pro.

Holy Stone produces dozens of low-cost drone models aimed at consumers. We look at the HS710 and HS175D to see if they stack up to other sub-250g offerings. Are these secretly great or more like toys?
Above $2500 cameras tend to become increasingly specialized, making it difficult to select a 'best' option. We case our eye over the options costing more than $2500 but less than $4000, to find the best all-rounder.
There are a lot of photo/video cameras that have found a role as B-cameras on professional film productions or even A-cameras for amateur and independent productions. We've combed through the options and selected our two favorite cameras in this class.
