I'm not surprised that Canon has not rolled over and given the 3rd party glass makers a free hit at their newly developed RF system.

I see it this way.

I have a studio that I've built, equipped, upgraded at substantial cost over 40 odd years. I've had to change with time, due to new customer requirements (and fads!), pressure to keep ahead of the others in the game, and to be fair, at times just to catch up.

In my areas of commercial photography it has given me a look, a feel, an ambience and efficiency in my work which brings me new customer's and retains the old. Sure others could copy or emulate my style but they will have to buy the gear and work out the systems/procedures and methods I've honed over decades - and I doubt they wan to spend - or have - the capital or time to fiddle about getting it right.

Like Canon I'm fighting to hold my share of a shrinking market so why would I just leave the studio front door open to let my competition use my studio, my gear, at their convenience for free?

If Sony Nikon etc what to License/giveaway their IP so be it. If I did that, it would be due to my desperation in that I could not compete and needed the others to pay me for my studio (because I didn't have enough work ) or perhaps hoping my facilities might be liked by their customers who I could identify, contact and perchance undercut!
