Re: Friday rant: The future of Canon RF and 3rd party lenses

I wonder how far we are through the life of relevant RF mount patents which Canon has in place to protect their intellectual property on the mount design? Does anyone know? I couldn’t find much on Google. RF mounts were announced about 5 years ago, so I guess at least 1/4 of their life has passed, perhaps significantly more?

I am very happy with my R5 and RF lens which I have purchased from Canon. I appreciate the innovations and performance which they have brought to market and don’t begrudge them from creating a sustainable business as long as it meets the needs. If it doesn’t, people will abandon.

One great thing about patents is that they are supposed to disclose enough so others can reproduce the innovations as part of the price to protect the IP for a set period of time. When does their protection expire so others can legally copy?
