Nikon Z 800mm/f6.3 PF Lens Serial Number Progression

Considering the price of these S Line telephotos, the hood is of extremely bad quality. It is entirely plastic (probably molded polycarbonate mostly) which is fine, BUT the cheap clip mechanism is also a flimsy piece of the same polymer, which is prone to wear.
I rate the 800 PF hood mechanism as distinctly better than the small extending screw of previous generation carbon fibre hoods.

As yet there is no UK price for the HB 104 hood. A replacement should be a lot less than a carbon fibre hood.
$150 @ B&H https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1700567-REG/nikon_4262_hb_104_lens_hood.html

What I wish Nikon actually made was a lens caps for the 800mm instead of that soft cover (or in addition to). I may actually have to go out and buy that Zemlin lens cap. $85 though. The Zemlin hood is $175. So I won't be buying that unless my Nikon hood stops working.

Mike

I also found the Nikon soft cover to be awkward. I used the soft cover from my 500mm f4 VR for a while. This is a looser fit. I now have the Zemlin lens cap. Not cheap, but a much better solution and well engineered.

For whatever reason, Nikon does not make any of those plastic, center-pinch lens caps larger than 95mm. At least the lens hood seems to fairly reasonably prices, and there are third-party options, although not cheap.

That HK-42 lens hood for the 400/2.8 TC is just insanely prices at $1070: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1685837-REG/nikon_4265_hk_42_lens_hood.html

You can buy some pretty decent S lens with that kind of money.

The HK-43 hood for the 600/4 TC is just as bad: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1733342-REG/nikon_4273_hk_43_lens_hood.html

I'm in the UK, ordered mine on the 1st Sept and it arrived on the 14th Apr.

Serial # 200061xx

So far I'm loving the lens, but hating the cover that goes over the end of the hood 😳

Both the hood and cover seem much cheaper and a lot more fiddly than those on previous generations of Nikon super-telephotos...

Just saw OP. Better late than never:

Something seems wrong with your information. You ordered it on September 1st? And it arrived when?

The hood is marked made in China - and because of its complexity my guess is production of the hood could not have been easily moved out of China.
My experience differs from 10+ months using the 800 PF - and the 400 f4.5S since September.

Considering the price of these S Line telephotos, the hood is of extremely bad quality. It is entirely plastic (probably molded polycarbonate mostly) which is fine, BUT the cheap clip mechanism is also a flimsy piece of the same polymer, which is prone to wear. The sharp corner of the 800 PF's clip has also worn round - so it no longer locks securely.
Not trying to make excuses for Nikon.

But having a hood, which protrudes a good distance from lens, made from plastic, along with clip mechanism to me is a good thing. Imagine damage done to lens itself if hood and clip were made of aviation grade (aka strong) aluminum.

Even Z-mount of lens to camera could be damaged as result of hood failing to snap off like a plastic hood and clip would with impact.

I ordered mine (officially, as in paying my deposit) April 6, 2022.

The lens arrived earlier today (!) March 2, 2023

SN 200059XX

I did order a Zemlin lens cap.

I did order a Kirk lens foot (revised version)

I did not order a third party lens hood. The stock hood seems ok to me.

The lust of being one of the first of now a common $6500.00 Lens is now over.. It is really no big deal anymore to being ordered 2 seconds after announcement. The lens is quite cheap and pretty much can be afforded by many where as the 400 and 600 Care an entire different story. This 800PF has no more hype and lust then the 500PF had in its glory days...Just a typical Nikon cycle of purchase and ownership of a lens. This is not like buying a 75MM Noct Leica Lens in any stretch of the imagination.

Ordered from a small dealer in Finland 23.12. 2022

Received today 03.03.2023

S/N 200062xx

I am not a NPS member but I have bought a lot of Nikon-stuff from the same dealer.

Saw that same post on FaceBook. That person turns out to be a friend of a couple of my Vietnamese friends. He lives in the Los Angeles area.

What is very unusual is that a lot of people are receiving their 800mm PF within the last week or perhaps 2 weeks. I started this thread in late January (24 January, 2023) so that it has been just a little more than a month (today being March 3). We have around 95 posts now, but something like 50% of those 95 are from within the last week.

What is interesting is that the high mark for the recent serial numbers seems to be Leonard Shepherd's 20006370+, but Jerry "LensWizard" got one 200054**. It is like Nikon has shipped some 900 800mm PF lenses within 2, 3 weeks. It could be a combination of (1) a lot of new PF elements that take 7, 8 months to fabricate are now available and (2) the end of China Covid lock down a couple of months ago is accelerating the final production of lenses. So far all Nikon PF lenses are manufactured in China.

Thanks again to all who are providing serial numbers.

And as 800 PF lenses are shipping relatively frequently now, 600 f/4 TC shipments have seemingly been nonexistent since the initial run. Which to me lends credence to the notion that these exotics are worked on in batches by a small group of people, one variety of lens at a time.

I wonder when we will start seeing 800 PF lenses appear at retailers for immediate shipping.
