Thank you for all your replies so far.

Budget and AF wise I am leaning towards the 60mm.

What I am trying to understand is how an image like this was taken?

Would it be just macro? Or macro + focus stacking?

Looking at other jewellery product photographers and one was using a full frame canon with the 24-105mm L mount lens for all her shots. Reading up about that lens it has close focus of 45cm but no macro capabilities.

So do I even need macro for objects around 15mm? Is close focus and cropping ability enough? (Along with sharpness etc).

There are multiple possibilities, and it is hard to tell which was employed by looking at the image. Possibilities include:

1. A small aperture provided sufficient DOF to get the entire subject in focus. (I'm not leaning toward that actually being the case in this example.)

2. A tilt/shift lens was used to align the plane of focus with the subject. That would work really well with this particular subject and presentation.

2. Focus-stacking was used. Also quite possible in this case.

On a different topic mentioned above, keep in mind that the ability to do 2x magnification at macro distances is only useful if you plan to photograph extremely tiny subjects. Most product shots aren't likely to be that small, so think through whether or not that is a practical advantage.
