So if I have 40 mp, and I crop those 40 mp it gives me more “room” to crop and retain detail so I would think that means there is more detail in that 40 MP image than a 26 MP image.

No, not necessarily. If the lens can’t deliver more detail than the 26MP can resolve, there won’t really be more recorded per se. What detail is captured will, however, will be recorded with greater fidelity due to the greater number of data points you get with a higher resolution sensor, making for a generally superior result due to significantly reduced moire and other demosaicing errors (particularly relevant with X-Trans sensors).

The good news, from the lenses I've tested so far on the XT5, is that all of my Fujifilm lenses provide sufficient resolution to gain some advantage from the 40MPsensor. This includes several lenses that are not on the Fujifilm list of allegedly 40PM "ready" lenses.

So, from what I've seen, you will get more detail with Fujifilm lenses on the 40MP cameras. Of course, the question that remains is whether the photographer shoots, post-processes, and displays the images in ways that take advantage of this improvement.

When in doubt, doubt.
