That's always been the case, but this time it's a matter of not infringing Canon's AF patent. Samyang had to pull its reverse-engineered AF lenses off the market because of that and now it's got manual focus lenses only.

It's always been a case of not infringing on Canon's patents. Canon has never been indulging infringements on its IPs. If Samyang pulled its lenses, it's because Samyang knew they were infringing on Canon's IPs.

So, how did Sigma and Tamron manage to do what they did with EF mount? Is there a chance of buying licenses, or did the EF mount patents expire before they could do anything? (I hope for the first).

You have to think about where electronics and related patent protections were 40 years ago. There's no way Canon could have anticipated that 3rd party lens makers would be able to crack their brand new first time autofocus protocol. I remember reading here that Canon set up their patents to protect the AF communications on the body side but not the lenses for EF which would explain a lot.

So it makes sense that their second time around they would lock things up more air tight. I'm sure Nikon did the same for Z mount, which is why they seem to be involved and coordinated with all the 3rd party stuff coming out there.
