But whether they would is a different question. I think it would be the final straw for many people, who are already frustrated that Sigma, Tamron and others are locked out by Canon's closed system.
Sigma, Tamron and others are not locked out from Canon.
Your words here (see below)
They work flawlessly or R cameras via adapter.
You know perfectly well what I mean,
I do. And that is why it is strange for me why you wrote it that way which implies something which is not true.
He obviously meant RF mount (and even wrote it in his reply to you). The moment EF lenses aren't supported anymore, neither would be Sigma nor Tamron, and the adapter alone doesn't make it an "open system". Like you I don't think the EF system will be locked out any time soon if ever, but making a system more "open" only thanks to old lenses and old systems doesn't seem the way to go to me. Eventually Canon will have to lift the ban, license the AF patent or something.
Without wanting to be picky, I am not reacting on what I suppose someone meant
And this already almost sounds like an oxymoron. Pick one...
Well it is just about the correct meaning of very common words. Is it being picky? No. It is just using the proped description.
Subjective
And you reacted this way to what he meant (he clarified RF mount in his reply).
Yes, later he did.
What I meant is that you kept pointing out your first reply after he clarified what he meant. Anyway...
To me he makes perfectly sense saying that Sigma and Tamron are locked out from RF mount system.
Sure, agree with this. But my reaction was on a different claim.
See above (Yes, I AM picky :D)
EF is not supported anymore,
Certainly they are. Perhaps you meant not developped any more, which is true. But they are supported since they work flawlessly on R cameras.
I pointed out somewhere else that my "absolute" claim was wrong (as of today).
Agree and appreciate your self-reflection.
What I meant is that they're being gradually, but fairly quiclky (?) discontinued (only 9 of them were still in production as of february 2022), and I don't expect any firmware update for cameras addressing whatever issue the discontinued EF lenses might have with RF mount.
The EF protocol is decades proven and tuned up. Not much (nothing) to update.
And this is about Canon lenses only, let alone 3rd parties...
No issue here, they use the very same EF protocol.
All in all it seems like a weird situation here with Sigma & Tamron (we all agree on this) locked out from present and future developments
There is literally nothing blocking Sigma and Tamron from developping new EF lenses and they actually do so.
, and Canon offering either entry level or premium for most focal lengths.
Yes this is very sad for especially enthusiasts. But it is a gold gift for Sigma which offers exactly these mid range priced lenses in the quality equal or exceeding Canon's premium lineup.
