Wish everyone the best of luck in their journeys and I'll report back on the R50 when it arrives. Pre-ordered it a bit ago. Cheers.

Happy to hear your conclusions. Quite a bit of your posts on the M forum have been helpful if not to appease GAS then to understand the gear and its IQ in question.

Personally after having smitten by the R6 and then looking for a lightweight 2nd body I have swung between carrying two R6s to, RP + R6, no R6 but R10 + M6 II.

In the R8 I think I am getting to the point where I think I might settle down.

R6 + RF STM 24-105 and R8 + L14-35.

Going through my past images I realised I shoot in the wide to ultra-wide more than anything else and for most uses the R8 won't be as frustrating as the RP along side R6.

Keeping that RF STM 24-105 on the R6 as R6 probably still is the most forgiving camera I have used.

Between the combination mentioned above I think I will still keep the RF 50 f/1.8 in the mix and hopefully I should be ok.

Cheers,

Actually, the 24-105 STM & 14-35 will make a great combo. The 24-105 is a very good lens from 35-105 so if you use the 14-35 up to 35 then you'll have high IQ over the entire 14-105 range. I've got that lens combo. I also have the RF 24-105 4L but the STM lens is much lighter and if you have something like the 14-35 to cover the wide end, the combo works well.

I am hoping this combo works. For travel I analysed my image library and realised I tend to use the wide end a lot more than the longer focal lengths.

So for me the roles of the two lenses are swapped I.e. I must have that 14-35L and have something (24-105 STM) to cover the longer end

Have pre-ordered the R8 and intend to use it with 14-35 and keep the 24-105 STM on the R6 (hoping that the 20Mp of R6 will leave any of the lens’ follies covered up)

The 14-35 is a new addition for me so I haven't used it much but I previously used my adapted EF 16-35 4L in its place and it worked very well. Got the 14-35 to cut down on weight and size. I expect similar IQ to the 16-35 which was very good but it is kind of large and hard to pack with the adapter.

I haven’t travelled with the 14-35 as yet but from what I have learnt so far using it is that it will be more than “just fine” and especially due to the 14mm and it is surprisingly compact for a FF 14mm to 35mm focal range. I previously had Oly Pro 7-14 f/2.8 lens and that lens was about the same weight as the RF 14-35, using filters on that lens was cumbersome and even being a Pro f/2.8 lens it wasn’t optically any better than RF 14-35 (which is a 2nd tier Pro lens in RF line up). TL;DR the RF 14-35 for me is the “main” lens and I think it will do just fine.

I do also have the RF 24-105 L lens and as much as I love it, for travels if I had to carry a lens in that weight class I’d think about the RF 24-240 instead… but in my experience I don’t think I have a use for a 10x super zoom and will rather travel light with the 24-105 STM. Coupled with R6 it should be a great combination… granted it is is definitely a fair-weather lens only.

If I do foresee the need for longer focal lengths then I have specific lenses for those applications in case needed.

Looking forward to the next travel opportunity.

Please do share your images from the RF 14-35 if/when you get the chance
