A couple of my favourite R5 features

R5 Histogram and animal eye detection.

For a long time, I have been setting my exposures manually when photographing birds. I gave up on auto exposure because my camera was sometimes fooled by dark backgrounds into overexposing white bird feathers. This would also result in the use of an unnecessarily low shutter speed and possible subject blurring. Since updating to the R5, I have found that its exposure simulation mode, combined with a small histogram in the viewfinder, has made choosing suitable exposure settings much easier. I keep the rear screen turned off while taking pictures.

One of the problems I have found when tracking birds such as coots skimming across water is the camera focusing on water splashes rather than the head of the bird. In my experience, the R5, set to animal eye detection, does a much better job of finding and locking onto the bird than did my 1D Mk4. I also find the animal eye detection excellent when photographing birds in other situations, of course.
