You nailed it.

85 shines indoors in home-spaces because you can’t back up. 135 shines outdoors or in wide open indoors, ie gymnasium, church, conference centers and the like.

Which is better? Depends on use case. Indoor sports? 135. Portraits? 85.

I’m a sucker for the 85, more versatility. You can usually zoom with your feet. Indoor sport’s usually a 70-200 2.8 affair. That said the 135 gets shots it can’t if 135 is able to encompass the shot… it’s f/1.8 after all vs 2.8 of the 70-200. Fashion shows, indoor swimming and outdoor portraits the 135 “wins”. Weddings, candid, studio work, product photos? 85.
